Ann, you and Meade appear to be enjoying yourselves a lot - that's very nice to see.

"There's a lipstick sunset
Smeared across the August (October) sky
There's a bitter sweet perfume
Hanging in the fields
The creek is running high

And I left my lover waiting
In the dawn somewhere to wonder why
By the end of the day
All her sweet dreams would fade
To a lipstick sunset"

I'd say the Devil's Lake area, but it's a little flat.

Nice eye make-up.

What you're seeing up there is the earth's shadow.

It comes down dark
Earlier and earlier
When you live
Up in the north.

Soon the refrain
"But I love the cold!"
As unlike bears burlier
We foolish venture forth.

Love the still of the sunset, the video is delightful.

He really is beguiled by you, Madame.

That kind of sunset used to inspire me to write poetry (yes, bad poetry) to The Blonde.

She is all the Cialis he needs, I think.

Texas gets out of yet another jam.

Napoli is up again with men in scoring position and the crowd is chanting his name.. The score and the series is all tied 2 - 2

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

Napoli hits safely this time..

Texas leads 4 - 2

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

Just go ahead and put him on

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

Wow..

Not in a million years did I see that coming..

A strikeout / throw out.

Texas leads series 3 games to 2.

I think Meade was having a Viagra-induced episode of diminished cerebral vascular flow. Package insert says one of the side effects is seeing color changes.

I went down to the Congress Street Bridge one evening in Austin to witness the bats. Standing on said bridge I got some beautiful pictures of the Tejas sunset. Alas, my fiance couldn't join me.

As the evening went on, larger and larger crowds of people appeared. On the banks, on the bridges, in boats. People dressed in bluejeans and tee shirts, and people dressed in formal wear. All to see the bats.

As the last hints of color seeped from the sky, First one, then a second darting shape appeared. No more than the sudden movement caught in the corner of your eye, that when you turn to look, is gone.

At full dark all 1.5 million bats come out in force. You can't see them, but if you're in tune with your inner animal you sense their presence. A stirring on your face from millions of flapping wings. You can't hear them, or see them, but you can feel them.

Most of the crowd, I imagine, hadn't had the up-bringing I had so probably went away dis-appointed. I took a few snapshots with my digital camera anyway feeling foolish but with Photoshop I was able to render a few pictures of this wonder.

The people of Austin feel about bats much like the people of Salt Lake City feel about seagulls, and for much the same reason. I highly recommend an evening spent on the Congress Street Bridge.

Just don't expect to see bats.

Another computing giant gone - John McCarthy, father of AI.

(had to learn LISP for a course; almost as bad as SMLNJ)

I think we were hoping to see someone else.

I knew him as a regular poster on the old sci.environment Usenet newsgroup in the 90s. He was fantastic - one of the original skeptics of environmental religion.

Lefties hated him. Back then he put his home address - including lat/long coordinates - on his Stanford web page in case the lefties wanted to get him. I guess they never bothered.

RIP

I read that Lindsay Lohan is going to pose nude for Playboy after she finishes her community service gig at the morgue. I guess she's just going from dealing with one kind of stiff to another!

Lovely photos...I love this time of year, great sunsets due to the lower angles.

At the hundredth meridian where the Great Plains begin

Driving down a corduroy road,
Weeds standing shoulder high
Ferris wheel is rusting off in the distance"

A common thread of the occupy group - covetousness, even to the point of contradiction (cough).

This.

So did all of you folks Up North see the northern lights last night? They were supposedly visible as far south as Oklahoma!

Shmendrik, My reaction also. How about a dramamine warning on that video. It is beautiful in spite of the agita. Sunsets are calming. I grew up w/ sunrises over the Atlantic [which are invigorating] during the summer and now sunsets over the Pacific in Winter, a certain symmetry.
