"Just hours before his death, ['Jackass' star Ryan] Dunn posted a photo on Twitter showing himself drinking with friends."

"We're told the car caught fire in the crash — and hours later, a tow truck was called to the scene to remove the charred wreckage."

Drinking and charred wreckage photos at the link.

ADDED: "Jackass 3D" trailer. Ryan is the one with the beard.

AND: Here's Dunn talking about his new TV "Proving Ground," which started just last week:

AND: Here's the "tasting chemicals" routine he was talking about:

It sounds cliché but you shouldn't drink and drive.

They were sucking their drinks through straws? WTF?

It looks terrible--the only thing less manly than wearing shorts is a man drinking alcohol with a straw.

Ann Althouse said...

Dunn is the one who is NOT using a straw.

OT (but, and I'm sorry, my sympathy here is limited): Has anyone been following the Wal-Mart class action SCOTUS case? Ruling just came down, and CNN's summary of it, that the court ruled (9-0) that the class "was simply too large" for the suit to go foward, is absolutely, shamefully, embarrassingly inaccurate. And there are already 400+ comments on the page, who took the whole thing as written.

Frustrating.

At least he died doing something he loved.

I'm surprised the Jackass crew lasted this long without a fatality of some kind. Although, granted, their mortality rate is better than rap artists.

Where's the "stupid" tag?

E.M. Davis said...

Ma'am, you appear to have mis-used the "actors" tag.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Or, as the saying goes, if you hear a redneck say, "Hey, y'all, watch this", get as far away as you can - it's Darwin Time.

William said...

I'd never accuse the Jackass crew of being unmanly. Those guys are overdosing on their own testosterone. Dunn now has the lasting fame of being the first fatality.

Fred4Pres said...

Oh well, at least they did not take anyone else out with this stunt.

I feel sorry for them. Most of us have to admit we have done stupid things and managed not to kill ourselves (more out of sheer luck than anything else). But if you keep pushing the envelope, things have a way of catching up to you.

Thank god for Darwin...

1) I do not wish my last words to be 'Oh, shit', but I suppose there are worse ways to go.

2) Live by the odds, die by the odds.

3) Live fast, die young, leave a charred corpse.

When I get frustrated at my own kids' occasional lack of foresight, I will remember this and be thankful instead. I feel sorry for their families.

This is a very short distance from my home. Car's don't leave that sort of wreckage easily - and today's cars don't catch on fire unless you shred them to pieces. I have no sympathy for the ridiculous levels of danger he put those around him in - moreso for the drinking.

Mourn for the good memories and loved ones he's left, but don't pretend the way he left this world was anything but while endangering everyone around him.

Who?

LL said...

According to the TMZ article, he is best known for shoving a toy car up his rectum (Rectum, damn near killed him - sorry I couldn't resist). Judging from his demise, it never pays to mess with cars.

It is sad whenever anyone dies in such a manner; however, considering how this guy lived almost everyone certainly saw something like this coming.

MarkG said...

Dunn is the one who is NOT using a straw.

Dunn is drinking a "Jack & Coke." One of the other guys has a "pink flamingo" and the other is drinking a Shirley Temple. That's explains the straws.

Thorley Winston said...

Yeah but someone has to pay for the damage he did. Police and firefighters aren’t cheap and sending them to that scene meant that they weren’t available to respond to another emergency. Depending on the damage he did the road, it may need to be repaired or else it could be a safety hazard for other drivers. Some insurance company is likely going to have to pay out for the Porsche he totaled (which will get passed along to responsible drivers in the form of higher insurance premiums).

Chip S. said...

Maybe he smuggled some nitroglycerin out of that lab and tried it as a fuel additive.

E.M. Davis said...

Dunn's passenger -- who police have not identified -- was also killed.

Dunn was identified by his tattoos, according to a witness who was on the scene when the bodies were pulled from the wreckage.

Fred4Pres said...

Thoresley Winston--I am sure insurance will pay for the towing. Police and emergency crews generally do not bill for responding to an auto accident. But I am all for making responding to accident costs a recoverable item (makes sense since it will help defray costs).

I have zero sympathy for someone who's main contribution to society was to coarsen and elevate its level of idiocy.

That's no excuse.

Jackass was a funny and successful brand. Young guys, especially, liked it. I am sorry that anyone dies like this and at that age but that is why I advise young adults to make only small mistakes and learn from other's big mistakes. Since it's nice to be available to say a few words at at your peer's funerals.

I think the fact that two people are dead demands a little more reverence than what's on display in this comment thread, regardless of how they died. Yeah, I know, 'put others at risk,' etc. That's irrelevant.

Reminds me of a couple weeks back, a young guy died after sliding down a rail at a Rockies game and hitting his head. The comment section on the news site was full of churlish, repulsive comments like, "stupid is as stupid does," and, yes, "thank God for Darwin." Absolutely disgusting.

It's ironic and depressing that the same people bemoaning how Dunn raised the coarseness and incivility of our society are all but celebrating the fact that someone is dead.

Fred4Pres said...

coketown. I am sorry he is dead. I do not see the comments here as that over the top. And frankly we are talking about a guy who shoved toy cars in his butt, on camera, for comic effect.

reader_iam said...

I know that spot well, too, TreeJoe.

It's pretty clear to me he was putting on the speed. Serious skid marks filmed by local newspaper.

LL said...

coketown: the deceased gained fame and notoriety by co-starring in movies entitled "Jackass." That speaks volumes.

Did you happen to watch the second YouTube video Althouse posted? Hard to muster a lot of sympathy for such destructive behavoir. I'm sorry but DADvocate is correct:

When you live on the edge, sometimes you slip and fall over.

That car up his ass thing was a funny bit though.

The funniest part was when he got the x-ray the doctor wasn't fazed because that wasn't the strangest thing he had seen shoved up there.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
