At the Fiddlehead Café...

... you can talk about anything you want. Donald Trump comes to mind for some reason. But that's a photograph of a fern fiddlehead, taken by Meade at Olbrich Gardens yesterday. Here's another:

First thing that came to my mind.

Donald Trump, for sure. But those 'snake' or 'worm' mustache/beards, too... just upside down!

I've never cooked fiddleheads, although I understand they're pretty tasty. Maybe I should harvest them today, we've got plenty. And the Spikenard is coming up too, which is also -- I've heard -- edible when young.

That really made me laugh out loud.

What Troop said (stole my idea).

Nice that the weather is looking that good there.

The Trump campaign needs to make that flower in a pot the official symbol of the Donald, and give them out to donors as a gift.

Where I live we have hapu'u ferns with fiddle heads six inches across. Back in the olden days they used the hair to stuff pillows and mattresses.

The killing of bin Laden gives Obama valuable Commander-in-chief credibility. This may be bolstered in the near term depending on how things unfold worldwide. The Democrats badly wanted to own a piece of the GWOT and now they do.

Obama still leads the "party of gro" at least as far as spending growth is concerned. The issue will still be around once the enthusiasm subsides.
Domestic issues could still trump in 2012.

Chickelit, could this please be the one thread in which we *don't* talk about the domestic political implications of bagging bin Laden?

Can't we share a happy moment as a united country?

Here here.. I'm with Rev on this one.

@revenant & Lem:

Sure, I'd be glad to. But I think other commenters were taking Althouse's cue & turning it into a forum on Trump until Trooper York came by and put the kabosh on that.

Trooper York said...

Hey don't blame me. I was just pissed because I didn't find out who got fired on Celebrity Apprentince. Talk about changing the subject!

Oh baby Mohammed!

So Obama harming millions, killing tens if not hundreds of thousands, and using his wife as a human shield are all okay. But burying him at sea is bad?

Next time we boil the bodies of killed Al Qaeda in a vat of bacon fat till they turn to one of those brown unidentifiable chunks, then we can bury that. Okay.

Fred4Pres said...

I wonder if the reason the Administration is not releasing the death pictures of Osama bin Laden is because he was wearing a dress trying to escape and they worried it would violate the Administration's new rules on Gender Identity.

I am just asking questions

Isn't it obvious? Osama did.

WV: falsfi: What Cindy Sheehan thinks we did to reports of Osama's death.

Freeman Hunt said...

I wish Osama had a name more distinct from Obama's. Too easy to typo. And to typo the names either way is terrible.

Fred4Pres said...

D'Oh! I just used Obama instead of Osama.

Freudian slip? I do not in any way shape or form think Obama is the equivalent of Osama.

Obama is an American president I disagree with on policy. I do not hate him, I simply do not want him to be president. I think I would find him perfectly fine to play a round of golf with or chat about things at a party with. I wish him no ill will, other than not getting reelected in 2012.

Osama was a enemy who I am glad is dead. He was a sociopathic monster.

chickelit said...

Teddy Kennedy once famously mixed up the names too.

If that's any consolation. :)

So. What do we do about Pakistan now?

rhhardin said...

If Pakistan controlled everything that went on in its borders it would be a sovereign state.

At the moment it can't and it isn't, so we come in and do what is necessary ourselves.

Were it sovereign, then there would be a cause for war.

I was with you up until the burial at sea when I realaized you meant Osama and NOT Obama.

It has been purported that Michelle is a beard for Obama and I agree with the first two statements, although I thought that Obama killing tens of thousands, even taking Lybia and Afghanistan into account, was a bit on the high side.

Hillary Clinton, May, 2010:

I am not saying they are at the highest level...but I believe somewhere in this government are people who know where Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida and where Mullah Omar and the leadership of the Taliban are. We expect more cooperation (from Pakistan) to help us bring to justice capture or kill those who brought us 9/11.

So how much did she know, and when did she know it?

I can easily imagine that she based this statement based on her own sources within the State Department. Either she chose not to speak more about this issue after May, 2010, or she was told to lay off.

Not saying that there's a conspiracy angle. I'm just curious.

Clearly, we didn't share this intel with anyone in Pakistan. Exactly how we managed to tell them that, um, they had better not pay attention to a couple of attack helicopters on May 1 is another story.

Bits from Abbottabad/Costellosbad:

Q. Who's on first?

A. I don't know but Osama bin Laden is out!

Peter Hoh said...

The description of Abbottabad as a suburb of Islamabad seems overblown.

Abbottabad and Islamabad aren't too far apart, but it seems that earlier reports that Abbottabad was a suburb of Islamabad seem to have stretched the idea of suburb.

Here are some aerial shots of bin Laden's compound.

Now to find it on Google Maps.

Peter Hoh said...

Back from trying to do that thing Chip does. The diners appeared to like the grub I set out for them to devour.

Anyway, the early Google map photos that showed the compound near the center of town were wrong. The compound is outside of the town, just to the south of the marker for Bilal Town.

This link might work.

Pakistan is in big trouble. Now that Osama is gone, there is little reason to stay in Afghanistan. I personally think it is not worth the bones of a single Pomeranian grenadier (or US Marine). This was the symbolic moment for us to leave. The hard drives and computers harvested from OBL's abode should be interesting re: the Pakistan connection. I will guess they are shi**ing knives about now.

India here we come !

I doubt it, given that US news outlets haven't shown anything. It is amusing that the Indians came up something though.

In case anyone is curious, GAB has the latest numbers on the WI SC recount:
http://gab.wi.gov/node/1735

Prosser now has a net loss of 148, but that's quite a ways away from 7,000+ that Kloppenburg would need to win.
Recount:
P:421,801
K:384,255
Original Canvas:
P:421,589
K:383,895

Something seems amiss in Waupaca county, two wards had fairly high percentage changes. Prosser had a net loss of 22 in the Town of Royalton and a net loss of 67 in the Town of Larrabee. This is in wards that only had 299 and 391 votes total. Those are the two largest errors so far, but a 17% error seems pretty high. I wonder what went wrong there.

1,484 wards of 2,088 had Zero net change.

"Dumping the body into the sea is not part of any Islamic ritual," said Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy and a physician of internal medicine. "Koranic scripture says God created him and he must return to the earth."

You just can't satisfy some people. An Alabama hog farm would've been better, but now it's too late.

Yeah, it looks like the driving distance between the compound and the Prime Minister's mansion in Islamabad is about 75 miles.
