March 1, 2011

There are young people in the Wisconsin Capitol who have been there, sleep deprived, for 15 days and are truly suffering.

I just watched video Meade brought home, and I am not going to put it on line. But I can tell you, there is at least one person there who has lost his mind from (apparently) sleep deprivation.

Someone needs to go around to everyone who is still there and check them for mental stability. Somebody needs to find the people who need to leave and don't know how to leave. If you are encouraging people to stay, to hang on and remain tough, you need to know that there are some truly sad people there who need to be told that they've done enough and must leave now.

Please, for the love of God, go around to the human beings who are there and talk to them individually. I know you believe in your cause, but there is at least one person among you who needs love and needs to be saved!

The Round House Gaol: Western Australia's first lunatic asylum.
Hudson-Rodd N, Farrell GA.

Centre for Development Studies, Edith Cowan University, Western Australia.

Abstract
This paper is an account of the social history of the Round House Gaol in Fremantle, Western Australia and of those lunatics that were gathered together into its closed geographical space. The first permanent structure, perched on the most elevated and prominent site in Fremantle, was a gaol; the design for which was based on Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon or Inspection House, created for the purpose of surveillance and control of inmates. Visible in 1997, the Round House still stands as a dominant, physical marker of the landscape, ranking as a premier historical tourist attraction in Western Australia. But its actual use as a place for the containment of lunatics is only cursorily alluded to. This paper addresses the previously ignored period of 1830-1850.

Ann, let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of your blog. However, you should probably think about whether you are addressing a student before they reveal that fact to you.

I have seen some of the personal comments you make towards some of your readers in the comment section. Some were very personal in nature (i.e., calling someone an idiot).

What differnce does it make AFTER someone reveals they are a student? How about just taking the personal attacks out of your responses all together? You know there is a high liklihood of you having students among your readers.

In Florida there is The Baker Act. I don't know about WI.

***
Florida Mental Health Act
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Florida Mental Health Act of 1971 (commonly known as the "Baker Act") is a Florida statute allowing for involuntary examination of an individual.

The Baker Act allows for involuntary examination (what some call emergency or involuntary commitment). It can be initiated by judges, law enforcement officials, physicians or mental health professionals. There must be evidence that the person

has a mental illness (as defined in the Baker Act) and
is a harm to self, harm to others, or self neglectful (as defined in the Baker Act).
Examinations may last up to 72 hours and occur in over 100 Florida Department of Children and Families-designated receiving facilities statewide.

There are many possible outcomes following examination of the patient. This includes the release of the individual to the community (or other community placement), a petition for involuntary inpatient placement (what some call civil commitment), involuntary outpatient placement (what some call outpatient commitment or assisted treatment orders), or voluntary treatment (if the person is competent to consent to voluntary treatment and consents to voluntary treatment). The involuntary outpatient placement language in the Baker Act took effect in 2005.

I don't see any reason not to have compassion for what isn't anything more than foolishness.

And saying "what an idiot" isn't anything like making a hero out of the idiot for it.

People need to drink adequate fluids or they quickly become mentally impaired and might not be capable of reversing the situation without help.

(And then there are the "Code Pink" type hunger strikes where not only do they drink water, but high calorie protein shakes and smoothies.)

Exactly. If a Wisconsin student chooses to speak here using a pseudonym, that's fine. They participate in a community of equals. But if they decide to say "I'm one of your students" then they are asking to be treated in a special way. They may think they get extra leverage by doing that, but it's a bad mistake. They are simply turning themselves into bystanders to the give and take here, because I am not going to go into my teacher relationship for one individual who chooses to identify as one of my students like that. It's a pretty cool thing that one of my students could come here and interact with me in this one-on-one way, as anyone in world can. If they don't see the value of that, that's their loss. I think it's a value, and I write this blog because I care about that value. But if you don't see the value, that's it.

The military has known this for centuries. It's how you get the troops to charge into gunfire. While armies don't march to the drum beat any more they still use cadence calls to form a bunch of individuals into a cohesive group.

The protesters are getting themselves worked up emotionally without a clearly defined target to attack, they have already taken the Capitol building. So they look for something else to turn their anger on. Push comes to shove and people get hurt.

The union leaders don't seem to care if the crowd gets out of hand and turns violent.

Vile indeed.

But let's all remember that while the lefties here assert Meade is an asshole, douche, and "instigator" for asking questions the protesters would rather not face, not one has anything negative to say about the protesters far worse actions.

Some of the "demonstrators" are from the quasi-criminal left which are pilot fish to movements like legal protests sanctioned by the local and state by-laws.

If this crowd harassing Sen. Grothman had been tea party members [impossible since tea party members are law-abiding and sane members of society fed up with fiscal harikari like the public unions commit], the MSM and lamestream operatives would be on the job 24/7 trying to goad violence and confrontation.

The use of drugs and particularly crystal meth might have something to do with the exhaustion and demented behavior of some of the protesters.

Also, being bussed in from out-of-town without local resources adequate to the upkeep of demonstrators could be another cause.

And some are just hippie, love-drug radicals left over from the sixties who have nothing better to do with their life.

I am appalled by the tone on this thread. I appreciate good humor on either side of the spectrum (I know lefties don't have a sense of humor)but if there are people on the edge then it's not a laughing matter. There is a potential Jared Lochner or Amy Bishop out there and the longer the protests go on the higher the probability that someone is going to be seriously injured or killed by one of these crackpots

Chip, I've been intermittently experiencing the same cookie problems. When I get the blogger error page, I just hit the back button and click on the Comments link again, and it almost always takes me to the right page, the second time around.

It would probably mean a lot if one of their Democratic legislators told them that they had fought the good fight and should now head home.

Somebody could take them a pan of brownies.

It's just weird to write, "I'm someone you know, but I'm not telling who!"

And identifying as a student sounds like a request to be part of the commenter farm league. Make a new name and see if you can hack it as an adult.

When I was fourteen and first had AOL, I used to lie and say that I was twenty-eight (sounded old to me at the time!) so that people would discuss things with me as though I were an adult and would hold me to an adult standard.

Brett Hulsey did just that on Sunday night. He's also the one who got in between Glenn Grothman and the protesters, yesterday.

Excellent comments. i'm going to see if I can 1. get them front-paged and 2, email them to Brett Hulsey.

k*thy, I really believe Brett Hulsey's moment may be now. I have, in my mind, been mocking him for what seems like a year. But yesterday, I got a glimpse of a man, a Democrat, of courage. I want to do what I can to promote that.

It's a pretty cool thing that one of my students could come here and interact with me in this one-on-one way, as anyone in world can. If they don't see the value of that, that's their loss. I think it's a value, and I write this blog because I care about that value. But if you don't see the value, that's it.

That's the reason I came here in the first place. It's a pity that I need to be castout, so to speak, but I understand why. To clarify, I didn't "identify" myself based on need for attention, or to seek special treatment. I got questioned on what I do and what I knew about con law all in the same post. I replied back, and Trooper picked up on it right away. I considered making another blogger name to keep posting here, but instead I'll continue to post as Dose of Sanity, and await the summer for your reply.

Cheers.

Dude!

Sorry I got you in Dutch with the teacher.

Keep posting but mix it up once in a while.

Pretend to be a Packers fan. Then everyone will think you are too dumb to be in law school.

Well, they should have done that on the first day... it would have cleared out the place in a hurry.

I suspect the banging of drums and whistles has at least one nasty intention: to keep everybody awake and riled up and to ultimately break them down by sleep deprivation into a mob.

"I suspect the banging of drums and whistles has at least one nasty intention: to keep everybody awake and riled up and to ultimately break them down by sleep deprivation into a mob."

The use of loud noises in such situations serves at least two purposes: It agitates supporters within earshot, serving to rile up the crowd - which can and does lead to mob mentality and associated behavior.

And, such behaviors also serve to intimidate those on whom the ire of the crowd/mob is directed.

In this case though, assuming what Meade reports is true, and from what I saw in the video about the punching of the Fox reporter and the intimidation of the state legislator, the psychological warfare being deployed is having the greatest impact on the people who are deploying it.

Dose, you seem to me a cowardly stalker. Please stop playing the victim card. You get your little thrill -- "you don't know me but I'm watching you" -- in class, and now you've decided to up the game and try to make Althouse feel insecure in her own classroom.

One of the many reasons I'm a proud democrat. To counter idiots like you.

LOL!!! A proud democrat is like a proud Muslim. Willing to martyr themselves for their respective death cults. There is nothing to counter when half-wits like you open their mouths to proclaim how proud they are to belong to a party and an ideology filled with the most wretched ideas imaginable. You're proud of that. Name one redeeming quality of being a democrat or of being a leftard. I'd ask you to name one redeeming quality of being a muslim, but your answer will most likely dovetail.

It's easy to be a democrat or a leftard. It requires zero thinking of any kind. Hey, maybe for you that's a redeeming quality. I'll let you be the judge.
