"Do you wonda who won — duh! — in the rotunda?"

An Althouse poetry performance...

The point of this poem...
Do you wonda
Who won
Duh!
In the rotunda?
We won!
Duh.
... is to demonstrate by counterexample that there was virtually no gloating by the winners in the legislative struggle that has taken place here in Wisconsin over the last month. For all the shouting and chanting and drumming and denouncing that we heard from the minority party, the majority party waited patiently, finally made a tough move, and engaged in no triumphalism. There was no "I won" from Governor Walker. Did you notice the graceful winning?

Not really, no. I pretty much expect the Republicans to act like adults when compared to the Dems, based on prior experience.

Seems a bit like visiting a day care center and noticing that the caregivers are not picking their noses and calling each other dooty-heads.

Gov. Walker has been impressively judicious and restrained throughout this process.

I think he's a legitimate contender on the national stage now.

Yeah just like we won in Iraq. Don't be a fool, Althouse. The republicans really over reached, woke up the democratic party, and made evgerybody realize what a bunch of jerks they are. They demonstrated that they're not about solving state budget problems- their only goal is partisan politics. And they will soon pay the price. This is the best thing that could have happened to the democrats. You idiots have now alienated the best friends you used to have : the Reagan Democrats. Some victory.

LMAO!

I think that you completely missed the point.

The point, at least as I see it, is that the legislative process triumphed and could not be subverted by the fleebagger's tactics or the mob tactics of the union.

If the Democrats win the next election, I think we can count on them to abide by the results, not flee across state lines or attempt to rule by mob law.

We cannot count on the Democrats to abide by election results.

I a few people are missing the point all together. The point of this as I understand it, and expect to be corrected swiftly if incorrect, is the maturity and humility displayed by Gov. Walker and his supporters following an intense 3+ weeks. Both sides showed emotion (vocal, written, or active); however, upon arriving at what might be the moment that sealed this thing up the opposition to the union supporters showed class and civility.

Let the hazing begin.

Really? 22 states are Right-to-Work states. 28 unionized states, California is a prime example, are killing themselves under bloated state-funded retirement systems. Why aren't the unionized states doing better?

Even The Zero admits we won.

Don't be a fool, Althouse. The republicans really over reached, woke up the democratic party, and made evgerybody realize what a bunch of jerks they are.

Well, I think "evgerybody" realizes that the Demos have been, and still are, asleep at the switch on many issues. If, by waking up, he means an Admiral Yamamoto moment, as long as they worship The Zero and people like Rich Trumka, it ain't gonna happen

And, on this, yes, the Demos and the unions have shown "evgerybody" what jerks they are.

PS Nice Noo Yawk there, Madame, a little Brando to Judge Garth.

I think we see a little young Althouse, ca. 1970.

Yes, excellent point.

But don't you think that comes from a genuine sense of purpose, compared with...what? An affectation? ...especially among the students. I still don't get their involvement. One would think that students, especially, would be wary of hocking their future to public sector unions.

Oh, c'mon, Ann.

They weren't graceful about winning. It is just not at all clear that they won.

Who says there were 100,000 protesting? What impeccable source provided you with that number? Hell, it's hard enough to get correct march numbers for DC; you really believe the numbers your side is putting out?

Oh. Right. Yes, you do.

Liberals will deflate a number on a budget and inflate the number attending a march. It's all about repeating the Big Lie.

A worthy attempt to capture the word manic phrasings of Charlie Sheen, but it lacks his intensity. One needs 36 consecutive hours of cocaine immersion and the company of porn stars to open those doors of perception and to attain that intensity....The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. Excessive sloganeering leads to the rotunda of Madison.

I'd say the Iraqis won in Iraq, which was the objective.

Likewise, the citizens won in Wisconsin.

In both cases the Republicans were on the side of the people and the Dems on the side of the corrupt minority. It's a pattern worth noting. Thanks Mut.

Up to now the Republicans have used kid-gloves on the public union employees, but that will change during an election. I'd welcome the debate over this bill.

I want to see Democrats defend bus-drivers getting 100K+ a year.

I want to see them explain why snow plow drivers are suing their local government because that government used part-time drivers in a snow emergency.

And I want to hear them explain why the taxpayers should fund the union-sponsored health insurance scam.

Bring it 'Dems. Rallies are all well and good, but you got some 'splain to do and evoking "The Grapes of Wratch" to a compliant liberul media ain't gonna cut it anymore.

A simple fact of math, economics and politics it that there is no way to get this nation and it many insolvent jurisdictions repaired without pissing off a lot of liberals, unions, politicians and special interests.

This last few weeks with the reactions of those entities in Madison is proof that the right things are finally up for consideration. The louder they scream the more confident I get in our future.

BTW, was there a single sign in all the thousands at these demonstrations that was both truthful and helpful?
OK, how about just truthful?

I wouldn't vote for him over a conservative, but if Mickey Kaus's views represented the majority of the Democrats, we would all be 100% better off, and nobody would feel like they lost.

Don't be a fool, Althouse. The republicans really over reached, woke up the democratic party, and made evgerybody realize what a bunch of jerks they are.

Hummm, sounds more like wishful thinking to me. If the Democrats really felt like this was a big win for them, they'd seem -- oh I dunno -- less depressed and more happy about it. The "we won the hearts of the American people" spin seems more like self-delusion to me. Soon everyone will realize that the world didn't end and that state jobs were retained, and all the overheated union rhetoric will seem even more silly than it did when it was first being said.

bagoh20 said...

"The republicans really over reached, woke up the democratic party..."

Well, what are you gonna say? You can't be honest and admit that you just spent weeks making it clear that you're greedy, selfish, clueless hypocrites entwined with corrupt unions dedicated to subverting democracy.

Because that's what everyone else saw.

There's a reason you are a professor! And, as a guest who comes here to find out what's going on "there" ... this is what I'd call:

A TEACHABLE MOMENT

Oh, back in 1966 ... When Reagan was running for Governor of California. (And, Berkeley students were demonstrating against the war in Vietnam ... WHILE WE STILL HAD THE DRAFT!) ...

Lyndon Baines Johnson was supposed to be a political genius! But, like Nixon, couldn't read the public's mood for beans.

Meanwhile, Governor Walker is ACING the test right now!

Of course we don't know what goes on behind the scenes. That's where the real action is and always has been. What we don't see. But publicly at least, it's true. No gloating. It's nice, yes. It's nice that that Ensign guy admitted his mistakes and was honest. Those sorts of admissions (so durn obvious!) we can always count on the Republicans to make. True that.

(except AA was kind of gloating.)

I am so glad this is finally over. What it looks like, fairly unexamined, from afar is that Wisconsin comparatively speaking is/was a state in good shape, and I never heard anything going on with the schools unlike DC and some Southern states, so I guess the ole if it ain't broke don't fix it was definitely not on the table here. But anyway, glad to be done with the garish Wisconsin reds of the photos (I hope).

David said...

"Of course we don't know what goes on behind the scenes."

Behind the scenes, Governor Walker is governing. It's his job. If he governs well, Republicans will retain a majority and he will be reelected. If he does not, all of this will be undone.

He will have trouble getting his message through the bumbling news media, but he knew that already.
