I was wondering this morning why the world needs to speak with one voice, as Obama said yesterday?

Why can't there be many voices with differing opinions?

Does America have to always wait until everyone else lines up behind her to speak? Is that what Obama is saying?

Or is he saying that he is waiting for someone else to come up with a position that he can "me too" - like a little Sir Echo?

However, some people will. Arab culture is awash in conspiracy theories. Couple Gaddafi's comments with Obama's thunderous silence and you get just the right amount of verisimilitude to poison the waters of US relations with a post-nutjob dictator Libya. Gaddafi knows his people very well, but our poor President doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

In my hood we already have "lexus lanes," where you can pay to drive in the carpool lanes, but it'd be nice to open up all the roads. Theoretically, at some point, the plight of poor/middle folks could become a problem for upper folks, OTOH, the upper folks haven't been hindered by others' stagnating, so maybe there's nothing to worry about.

In this thread, I've already quoted the theme song from The Facts of Life.

But, now it seems appropriate to (musically) look back at the turning point where the rich and middle/poor folks started their decades long divergence. And, there's a public worker involved:

Dear Abby,

Got a problem. I'm a decent, underpaid, hardworking county coroner. It's
important that my family eat meat at least three times a week. But we just can't
afford to with the prices the way they are. So I bring home some choice cuts from my
autopsy subjects. Just mix in the Tuna Helper:and ta-da!

The whole family thinks my new meals are delicious. They ask me what's
my secret. Abby, I think they're getting suspicious. My smart-ass 8-year-old keeps
asking, "Where's all the meat? The red dye #2 kind that's kept in the fridge."

If they find out the truth I don't think they'll understand. Abby, what do I tell
my family?

DEAR REAGANOMICS VICTIM: Consult your clergyman. Make sure the body's
blessed and everything should be just fine.

At CU in Boulder Kadafi cost me personally.

I got into it with an Arabic male professor about SDI and I got a lot of the class backing me instead of him.

SDI-one of the liberal arguments was-no one crazy would be the head of a country.

This Arab male professor was telling me there would never could never be another "crazy" leader like Hitler. A crazy person could never get control of a country.

He said to me-

"Name one crazy head of state?"

So-I'm all cautious-I'm afraid the prof might be Iranian so I don't answer Ayatollah-who-ha- ...

I answer-

"Kadafi!"

The kids back me up.

All of sudden he's in my face asking me-

"What do you think of the "right of Israel"?

I finally smarten up-and tell him-

"I haven't studied that enough."

He starts yelling-

"What year are you?-Third year and you don't know enough to have an opinion!?"

I get a C- in that class.

Later I sign up for a Middle East Conflict course sailing along with an "A" average but that prof has a heart attack.

Mr. "Kadafi's not Crazy" replaces him.

A to C- in two weeks.

I would like to think that Obama is keeping a relatively low profile because several hundred Americans are on a ferry boat that is stuck in Tripoli because of bad weather. Gaddafi has no scruples about killing his own people. I don't think that he has any strong inhibitions about killing Americans. I don't think Obama's silence or protests will have any great effect on how events play out there so it's bestg to wait until the passengers are out of harm's way.......Castro and Chavez have been noticeably reluctant to criticize Gaddafi. Will this cost them any support among their leftist fans? Also, it's worth noting that when push came to shove, the west leaning dictators did not fire on their own populace. Compare Egypt and Tunisia with Algeria, Libya, and Syria who have not hesitated to inflict mass casualties on their subjects. But don't compare Libya's handling of the protestors with Israel's handling of a Palestinian demonstration. That would be unfair and totally irrelevant.

Needless to say Reagan's career, political and otherwise was/is very mixed.

The Corruption of Ronald Reagan

er oh I'm sorry St. Ronnie ;)

By his own admission, Reagan immediately aligned himself with the corrupt Teamsters and other mob-connected unions in an effort to combat Hollywood Reds.

A sweetheart relationship developed between MCA and the guild, which culminated in July 1952 during Reagan's fifth consecutive term as SAG's president. The agreement violated SAG's bylaws.

At the end of Reagan's fifth term, he began to have serious financial problems, particularly with the IRS. In response, MCA negotiated a deal with the Last Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas--which was then operated by Chicago mobsters--for Reagan to host a song-and-dance show for two weeks and to receive enough money to cover his back tax debt.

Despite his status as a television producer, Reagan remained on SAG's board in another violation of the guild's bylaws, which prohibited producers from holding office in SAG. In 1959, when Reagan ran for an unprecedented sixth term as SAG's president, his opponents raised the bylaws issue. Publicly, Reagan denied that he had ever produced The General Electric Theater--a flat-out lie.

The contract that Reagan and company arranged with the studios is still known in Hollywood as "The Great Giveaway"; it provided residuals for actors only from films made after 1960. This greatly benefited MCA, which had purchased the film library of Paramount Pictures in 1959. Now, MCA could keep all the profits.

In 1962, the Justice Department filed a federal antitrust suit against MCA on the basis that it was both a talent agency and a production company; SAG was charged as a coconspirator.

Reagan was the subject of criminal and civil investigations by both the FBI and a federal grand jury in Los Angeles. A Justice Department memorandum quoted a Hollywood source as saying, "Ronald Reagan is a complete slave of MCA who would do their bidding on anything."

Reagan was subpoenaed before the grand jury, but he appeared to experience amnesia during his testimony on February 5, 1962, and failed to recall the major decisions that had been made when SAG had granted MCA the exclusive blanket waiver in 1952. Federal prosecutors were so convinced that Reagan had perjured himself repeatedly during his testimony that they subpoenaed his and his wife's income tax returns for the years 1952 to 1955. Nancy Reagan had been a member of SAG's board of directors since 1951.

>

Deeply affected by the breakup of MCA, Reagan, a lifelong Democrat, became an anti-big government Republican. He had been urged to do so by his own political mentor, Taft Schreiber, a longtime MCA vice president, and by MCA's founder, Jules Stein, both of whom were active in Republican politics.

>

As President, Reagan watched as his Justice Department quashed major federal investigations of the Mafia’s penetration of both MCA and the entire motion picture industry, which were being conducted by the Los Angeles office of the U.S. Strike Force Against Organized Crime. Two highly respected Strike Force prosecutors, Marvin Rudnick and Richard Stavin, lost their jobs because of their refusal to succumb to pressure from the Reagan Administration.

Again, if one is looking for a saint, it behooves one to totally avoid politics ...

Dare I say, Reagan was straight out of central casting :) much like JFK and Obama.

Let's get real about who really supports him:
Some of the biggest oil producers and servicers, including BP, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Chevron, Conoco and Marathon Oil joined with defense giants like Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, multinationals like Dow Chemical and Fluor and the high-powered law firm White & Case to form the US-Libya Business Association in 2005. The members of its executive advisory council each pay $20,000 in annual dues to the group, which is managed by the National Foreign Trade Council, a coalition that seeks to facilitate international opportunities for U.S. companies. Most of the group's members have lobbied the U.S. government since 2004 to protect their investments in Libya or to iron out business problems with the regime.
