It's unfortunate that so many commenters on blog pages see the President's behavior and try to emulate it. Or maybe the President has seen the behavior on blogs and is just following along.

Congratulations, by the way, to the Giants.

"Enemies" was a classic Kinseleyan gaffe. That's why he can't fully walk it back with a clear and unequivocal "I SHOULDN'T."

For a guy with such great intelligence attributed to him, he clearly has ZERO discipline. This isn't the first time he's gone off message with his ad-libbing, and I can guarantee you it won't be the last.

He has shown himself to be easily shaken and easily taken off-message. That's only going to get worse now that he's going to have to ACTUALLY do something without leaning on Pelosi and Reid to all his heavy lifting for him.

The next 2 years are NOT going to be fun for him, and it's going to show. Count on many more such moments to come....

Garage: I never said that he didn't say he said enemies. I said that he said it but didn't mean to say that enemies is what we are but what they are. Enemies.

It's obviously true he shouldn't have said it, but that's a political argument. He accurately portrayed his beliefs in his original statement.

Cry me a river, you hypocritical babies.

He was right the first time. The people who constantly lie about Barack Obama are his sworn enemies. They certainly think so. They are dedicated to his defeat.

They do not hesitate to lie, cheat and steal to get their way. They hate Barack Obama, they hate liberals and Democrats. Mainly, they hate!

It's a not-so-polite fiction to say we are just opponents.

Issob Morocco said...

The word "probably" still shows him unwilling to admit to the severity and in my opinion the honesty of his statement. He views those who oppose him as enemies.

If he had said, I was wrong to use enemies, I should have said opponents, then one can accept it, but even here he qualifies, by using 'probably'. As if that was a better idea but was one that was sincere in his heart.

The Lame Duck will be served cold and bitter.

traditionalguy said...

Alpha...We don't hate you. But we would like to try a Reagan style President again. Remember, the guy the liberals loved to hate? He was the SOB that took out your beloved USSR. But if you can learn to live with that, then you can return to mental stability.

Alpha,
That's unusually perceptive of you.
Ultimately, the media did hurt him by putting him on a pedestal he didn't deserve.

He thinks of middle America in terms of enemies. He thinks of the world where people are paid a salary that is not extracted at gunpoint that way. From his book:

Eventually, a consulting house to a multinational corporation agreed to hire me as a research assistant. Like a spy behind enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan office, and sat at my computer terminal, checking the Reuters machine that blinked bright emerald messages from across the globe.

Actually, Alpha, the people who constantly expose the truths about Barack Obama are his sworn enemies, at least Obama says so.

They are dedicated to his defeat, (at least, the defeat of his policies), so perhaps "enemies" is correct. But they aren't the enemies of American citizens. That was wrong of Obama to say.

I think he forgets other people are watching and reporting when he goes from town to town and group to group, as if he could say completely different things in separate locations and not be called on it.

As if he had gotten a lot of practice doing that already. You know, in Chicago.

The hell they aren't.

The policies of Barack Obama's opponents will put the people at the not-so-tender mercy of big corporations;

* repealing health care to help big insurers that screw Americans every day,

* for pay and benefit cuts from big corporations that have driven wages down while US productivity has soared

* for layoffs as they outsource jobs overseas and dismantle American manufacturing,

* for polluters who want to use our homeland as a dumping ground for their waste,

* for deregulation of food protection services that poisons our food supply,

* for endless wars that they will not even pay for,

* for white racial resentment that divides the American people along racial lines,

* for a religious state governed by that human hybrid: Wall Street-Evangelical Republican coalition,

* for undermining the American electoral system by allowing corporations, domestic and foreign, to dump massive amounts of cash in to elections,

* for refusing to accept and respect the results of American elections when they lose and betraying our system of government.

That list is by no means exhaustive.

Oh Vain Ones: I do not follow every bizarre debate you have here.

Funny, that's what ObamaCare just did. The only difference is that Obama's opponents let you choose what corporations to do business with, and Obama doesn't.

It's pretty ridiculous when allowing people to make voluntary purchases is scary, but mandated purchases are not. How demented do you have to be to arrive at that conclusion?

* for white racial resentment that divides the American people along racial lines,

Remind me again whose DOJ has an explicit policy of refusing to pursue cases where minorities discriminate against whites?

Whose DOJ was it that dropped the case against the Black Panthers AFTER they had already won it?

Which president told Latinos that they need to punish their enemies?

Which president sat for 20 years in Rev. Wright's church and never had a bad word to say about it until it became a political liability?

Who named the person who claimed that being a "wise Latina" made her MORE qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice?

Should I go on, or are you embarrassed enough to go away with your projecting the racism so evident within the Democratic Party in general - and Obama specifically - onto other people?

AlphaLiberal said...

It's my hope that the Democrats learn their lessons from whatever happens today.

The modern Republican Party will never compromise or negotiate with Democrats. They are wedded to their scorched earth tactics, their lies, their sense of entitlement.

Modern Republicans don't think any rules apply to them because they think they are SPECIAL and have a privileged status. Hence, their hundreds of double standards. They think they don't have to tell the voters what they really mean, as Ron Johnson and Sharon Angle have said.

They think being polite to people who are different than them is outrageous "political correctness."

Write. them. off. The only way these authoritarians will relate to others in America is by ordering the rest of us around. Resist!

In short, Republicans are plutocrats who no longer believe in the American system of government.

"The modern Republican Party will never compromise or negotiate with Democrats."

Let's hope. Bush tried with his Medicare Part D and No Child Left Behind. The results?

1. Dems demonized him even beyond his predecessors.
2. Dems took his willingness to address the issues as a sign to move their demands even farther left. The existence of Rep $200 billion programs then justified their demands for $1.7 trillion programs.

You can't negotiate with the Dems on fiscal matters. There is no limit to the amount of the economy they believe government should control.

Jim said...

The Tea Party movement is built on white racial resentment.

Even the DNC gave up on that tired talking point a couple months ago when it became clear that it was backfiring. You see, calling people racists for opposing your policies tends to make them even MORE motivated to vote your sorry arses out of office. Because, IT TENDS TO PISS PEOPLE OFF.

Especially since that "racist" Tea Party movement is set to bring more black conservatives to Congress and in state houses across the country than have ever attained office.

Funny side point: Donna Brazile, in talking about how "racist" Republicans are because Republicans have often voted for African-Americans in their own primary, those candidates have lost in the general. Which, if you examine her statement closely and look solely at the racial component, says that Democrats are more racist than Republicans. After the Republicans DID and ARE voting for African-Americans. It was the majority of the OTHER voters in the general that are rejecting them. Why do Democrats hate black people, Alpha?

Turn in your talking points, and tell Axelrod to pack for Chicago. He's going home.

There is the Muslim Community Center planed for a former Burlington Coat Factory in lower Manhattan, which conservatives want to stop.

There is the candidacy of American Muslim Keith Ellison. The hate from the right wing toward that man has been astounding.

If your friends were close enough to see all this, will they testify at the trial? Were they victims of the melee as well? How did they happen to be in a good position to see the whole affray? Did they buy something from Gladney, then stayed around? Why didn't they intervene -- too scary?

From his ideological perch can only be seen: racists, selfish wealthy people, hillbillies, republican obstructionists etc.

Not, you know, actual INDIVIDUALS, which is partly why his party is being routed in the midterms (though mostly it's the economy stupid),

No. You have a lot more lies up your sleeves.

"I probably should have used the word 'opponents' instead of 'enemies'."

On the old Get Smart! TV series, a recurring trope was to have Maxwell Smart sneer at an enemy:

"All right, Hondo! I'm used to dealing with big ugly apes like you!"

Max then punches Hondo three times in the stomach, gives a karate chop to the right shoulder, and slugs him in the face. Hondo doesn't even flinch.

Max puts his arm around Hondo. "Eh ... Listen Hondo, I ... ah, I hope I wasn't out of line with that crack about the ape ..."

If Don Corleone had met John Boehner, he would have told his kid: "Keep your friends close, but your opponents closer."

This is political correctness run amok. And from the Republicans yet.

I knew Nixon. And your no Nixon. Nixon had better style. Obama couldn't deliver a "Checkers" speech if his political life depened upon it.

Obama illustrates to me what is truly rotten in our academic admissions process. He is reputed to be "bright". But, in my humble opinion, he lacks wisdom. He has no gravitas.

He is hip but he is no longer kool. His 'coolness' has deserted him.

There is no there there. A suit in search of a soul.

Only prolonged suffering will provide him with the opportunity to gain wisdom. May embark upon such a course of study this very evening.

Yeah, “Political Correctness” and I’m SURE if the BooosH*tler had termed Code Pink his “enemies” you’d have been just as forgiving. The POTUS has, domestically, opponents, the United States, collectively, has ENEMIES…Boehner OPPONENT, Al-Qaida ENEMY…Thomas Dewey OPPONENT, Imperial Japan ENEMY…see the difference? POTUS’ ought to be very, very careful about declaring US citizens as “the enemy.” And I believe, FLS, Obama has thrown you under the bus…he didn’t complain about “Political Correctness.” He owned, as much as he’s going to own up to it. But you keep on having relations with that chicken if it makes you feel better…and say hello to Rev. Wright whilst you’re under there would you?

For a guy with such great intelligence attributed to him, he clearly has ZERO discipline. This isn't the first time he's gone off message with his ad-libbing, and I can guarantee you it won't be the last.

I see no indication his intelligence is above average. He's never accomplished anything but getting elected president - his other elections were accomplished by taking out the , ah, opponent. He's probably not as intelligent as Bush, for all the fantasizing on the left.

John Boehner's Unfamiliar Quotations:

Never let the perfect be the opponent of the good.

With friends like these, who needs opponents?

If thine opponent be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. -- Proverbs

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou aret with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine opponents: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. -- Psalms

Nobody's opponent but his own -- Dickens

Treat your friend as if he might become an opponent -- Horace

Better make a weak man your opponent than your friend. -- Josh Billings

They love [Grover Cleveland] most for the opponents he has made.

The English laborer does not find his worst opponent in the nobility, but in the middle class.

Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world; yet is every man his greatest opponent, and, as it were, his own executioner.

As for the President..."I probably should have used the word 'opponents' instead of 'enemies.'"

You think? Always a fun headline the day before an election!

John Boehner's Unfamiliar Quotations:

That's an awfully lot of spinning. I fail to see in any of the "quotations" any wisdom in which the president of "all the people" should be calling those SAME people his "enemies." Or turning those citizens against each other by calling them enemies.

False equivalency is false. You're going to have to do much better than this. Up your game.

Conservatives say Obama's not much of a speaker, yet they believe his mere referring to one's enemies can summon them into existence.

1) That makes no sense.
2) Obama was the one who decide to bring the overheated rhetoric. Therefore, it's not wrong to call him on "acting stupidly."
3) You would STILL be crying like a schoolgirl if Bush had called Democrats ENEMIES. If you had even an ounce of shame, your rank hypocrisy would prevent you from even posting on this thread.

Nobody's taking you seriously: we're just pointing out how badly your lame attempts at spin are going for you. Perhaps you should join America's Politico for the remainder of the evening's festivities.

DO Latinos have “enemies?” And if so, who are they? Please enlighten us FLS? No one said Obama doesn’t have enemies, our point is that Republicans and Independents voting against him AREN’T his enemies, but Achmadinejad and Usama ARE, but Obama and Napolitano seem to think that the AMERICANS are the enemies instead. Can’t help it if you are stuck on stupid FLS.

Yes, Obama was just being honest. No need for him to apologize or retract his words. He should feel free to continue to tell us how he really feels about his opposition.

However, do you believe that most Americans really want an openly partisan president, who uses divisive rhetoric to push his party's agenda? Do you really not get why the Repubs are making an issue of this?

If this were an isolated incident, most would give him a pass, as a slip of the tongue. But it isn't. He is openly contemptuous of his opposition. They don't need spin doctors to parse his words for them. They know where they stand with him... in the back.

former law student said...

He's just throwing out random crap hoping something will stick.

Good description of how the Right played this out:

1. Obama suggested that Latinos reward their friends and punish their enemies.

2. Right-wing echo chamber hysteria conflates Obama with Latinos; turns a suggestion to a mandate, then a promise: Obama: "We're gonna punish our enemies"

3. John Boehner hears this, clutches his pearls: Americans are not the enemy -- Islamoterrorists are. Republicans are Obama's opponents, not his enemy.

4. Obama: OK, Fine, opponents.

former law student said...

Do you really not get why the Repubs are making an issue of this?

My guess is to cover up McConnell's gaffe, "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." Because, as Rush put it the day after the Inauguration, they hope Obama fails, and they're working as hard as they can to make it happen.

@FLS, how do you manage to spin so energetically without getting so dizzy that you puke?

Or have I made a bad assumption? Is it the case that after writing drivel such as your 3:18 comment you have to grab a nearby trash can where you lose your lunch, breakfast, and previous night's dinner?

How about we apply Occam's razor? Your guy misspoke, and he did so because he conflates opposition to his policies with enmity towards him?

Joe said...

We do hope he fails. Your side hoped that Bush would fail. What’s the problem FLS, dish it out, but can’t take it? I hope EFCA, Cap n Trade, Obama Care and all that fails, FLS, why shouldn’t I? And if that takes defeating Obama and making him a failure, that’s what it takes. Of course, if you and Obama will refudiate your support for these ill-conceived schemes, then we won’t hope for his failure.

Jesus, I can't believe FLS believes that. Obama asserted that Republicans are latinos enemies.

Big Mike -- the Right enjoyed a spasm of manufactured indignation. It's over.

Jim said...

Alinksy said "Make them live up to their own standards."

Democrats have been using that tactic against Republicans for a couple of decades now to seize on even the slightest phrase, intentionally twist its meaning, and take down their opponents.

Conservatives say "Make them live up to their own standards."

Republicans point out what Obama clearly said. And clearly meant. Now those same Democrats cry foul and try to intentionally twist its meaning in order to stop their guy from being taken down.

Sucks when you're not the only one playing the game any more, doesn't it? Poor Democrats. They may never recover from having their own tactics turned on them.

Your answer reveals why you guys are considered out of touch. You think Americans would be appalled by one party wanting the other party to lose; (I would hazard a guess that most are not, but instead see it as part of party politics). Yet you do not think that Americans would be appalled by a sitting President referring to the opposition as enemies that need to be punished.

Yes, the Repubs are using it as a hammer against Obama because they want him to lose (shock and surprise). But you don't seem to get why it works. This president has used his bully pulpit to demonize and dehumanize the opposition. As I said, this gaffe was not an isolated incident. If it were, his words would not resonate as negatively as they do to many Americans.

Eric said...

That's not a gaffe at all. It's just a statement of (a very reasonable) purpose. Of course, the Republicans in Congress will screw it up between now and then, but it's still a noble goal.

You know why the Republicans are making a big deal over what the president said? It goes to Obama's credibility, or what's left of it. Remember all that "post-partisan" stuff?

Did Bush ever refer to another American as his "enemy" in eight years as president? If he did, I don't remember it. And Bush didn't get the kid gloves in the press and in Hollywood.
