At the Double Rainbow Café...

DSC00312

... we're feeling twice as optimistic.

Now, get out of the duckweed pond and carry on your open-threading up here, in the new day, the day we call: June 19th! Yay! Hooray for June 19th! Isn't it gorgeous? I did get some gorgeous late-sleeping accomplished, so the day is off to a smashing start.

And here's the coolest version of a great old song:

There was a semester when I listened to that in my car every day when I drove my 5 minute drive to work. Someday you'll find it... And then I found it!

Rainbows!

My wife made me watch "It's Complicated" last night. I got the distinct whiff of Althouse off of Meryl Streep.

Althouse, did you see it?

I cant believe I don't have that son on my Itunes.

I'm going to remedy that in a jiffy.. not like I'm a liberal activist judge or anything like that ;)

Just saying..

PS Happy Juneteenth, for those who know of it. Edward Canby, who negotiated the peaceful surrender of the Confederate forces (over lunch) on either side of the Mississippi and the Gulf Coast, truly ending the Civil War, is one of the unsung heroes of American history.

Willie Nelson is a crazy old Truther. I am one Texan who can no longer stand him or his music.

Rialby said...

Albatross - Willie is indeed a truther. Being a fan of his music and realizing that his head is full of bong resin, I guess I've made an allowance for him. Is that wrong?

Albatross said...

Willie Nelson in February 2008:

"I certainly do," Nelson said Monday when asked by talk show host Alex Jones if he questions the official story.

"I saw those towers fall and I've seen an implosion in Las Vegas, there's too much similarities between the two. And I saw the building fall that didn't get hit by nothing," the singer-songwriter said. "So, how naive are we, you know, what do they think we'll go for?"

Kids, be careful with pot. Too much of it can fry your brain.

Albatross said...

Rialby, I've made allowances for Willie Nelson (and many other musicians) for a long time. The Truther comment proved one straw too many for me.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

And of course Itunes doesn't have that particular version.. they don't have it because..

I was going to curse them but this post has such a wonderful quality to it.. I shouldn't tamper with it complaining.

I'm leaving on a jet plane to Santiago de los Caballeros tomorrow morning first flight out of Kennedy.

I'm a little exited.

I do the same with all the artist I like.

There were 29 descendants left, at the time I left for these United States ;)

My mother has no clue I'm going.. its going to be a surprise.

I used to surprise her like that when she lived here in Providence RI, and I lived her in NJ.

So its not totally outside my character to do this.. I cant understand why people, families, don't surprise each other all the time.. it helps that I'm single I guess.

@double rainbows:

The second rainbow is nearly always there if you know where to look. It's not always complete though.

My wife calls it the "female" rainbow, which I suppose is the Mandarin for it. In Three Kingdoms the sighting of a female rainbow inside the Imperial palace was a sign that the dynasty was doomed.

The Bible story is so charming. God puts up the rainbow as a sign He won't drown us again--He plans to kill us with fire.

Look at a rainbow and imagine where the center would be if it was drawn with a compass, the exact opposite direction is where the sun is.

I'm feeling optimistic.

I actually got a real live INTERVIEW on Monday with a real person in response to an online job application.

This is a first!

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

The beauty of my Dominican trip is that I will be (hopefully) withing the friendly confines of my family and friends.. Meaning things will not cost me an arm and a leg.

I want to take my mother to a nice fancy dinner at a nice restaurant.. she loves that kind of thing.

My mother complained to me that posesions, things here in the US meant very little because of our liberal credit.. Las cosas aqui (in the US) no lucen she used to tell me.. (Nothing shines here)

Credit will be the undoing of this country.. its as if because things mean little, people mean less.

Anyway.. I talked to my bank and they told me I wont have the privileges I have here.. I will be charged for using the ATM.. even if its my own bank.. and they will do the conversion.

Anyone have an iPad here? I have a question for you if you do. Has anyone tried using a remote access app to make the iPad run more like a computer, i.e., access Office documents and applications remotely? If so, how'd that go for you?

I'm lobbing this out here, but I won't be around for awhile to engage if anyone responds.

Beth said...

To be clear, I am talking about using an iPad app to log in to your desktop remotely, and work on documents using the full-bore applications.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

I used to log on remotely to my employers computer from home.

My impression was that that the home computer acted only as a conduit.. a mule.

Ipad? don't know if it works that way.

In my sister's Ipad a digital keypad comes up and leaves little room for graphics and such.. I'm assuming your connection computer requires you to use a keyboard.

Except for credit given to people who want to start their own business, or expand the business they have.

We also need to except credit given to those capable of paying it off according to the terms of the contract.

Actually, they aren't similar at all. When they implode an old building they take out the bottom and center. The two towers collapsed from the top down.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

Or did you mean to say that as THINGS mean more, PEOPLE mean less, Lem?

The easier it is to acquire something you have been told (and you know in your hart) that you cannot afford.. The easier it is to get it (via credit)...

The less it is appreciated once "owned".

The Joneses have the same credit line if not better..

My mothers point was that the idea that you ca afford something doesn't mean anything in a mad credit driven economy.

I think she's right.. the fact that she saved all her life and did not plunder her inheritance.. and now a "come mierda" (any piece of shit) can drive a better car than her on credit seems alien to her.. it ought to seem alien to us too.

Penny said...

Now we are into the "gray" areas of a post about rainbows.

If we have any economics types around, maybe they could explain just how many shades of gray there are that might still lead us to a pot of gold.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

My mother and my father have both purchaced their resting place.. the idea of leaving a "derroche de lios" behind for other people to sort out is inconceivable to them.

Penny said...

"My mothers point was that the idea that you ca afford something doesn't mean anything in a mad credit driven economy."

Interesting. Many people do assume that if they are APPROVED to buy something on credit, that is as good as "owning".

Their thinking runs something like this...

"What asshole would lend me money to buy this if they didn't believe in my ability to pay it back?"

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

I hate to sound like a fortune cookie but it seems to me that the less problems you have in acquiring things - stuff (because of credit).. the higher the expectations you are going to put on the people who are meant to be impressed by your acquisitions.

Credit harms people.

Penny said...

"What a crock. I guess once a hippie, always a hippie."

Maybe so, Peano. haha

Help us out here!

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

People who "have" expensive stuff usually "have" it because they cant afford it.

At the top of my list is the fact that.. its true.. you cant take it with you.. then there is the Double Rainbow, the really good stuff is not for sale.. and then even the stuff that is "good" and is for sale can it compare with the stuff that cannot be taken away.. the stuff that makes stuff happen.

Penny said...

"Credit harms people."

Actually, in the long run, extended credit has probably helped more people than it has harmed.

It's how businesses that employ people got started back to the middle ages.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

The stuff that makes things happen.

Usually if you like your job is because you LOVE wath you are doing.

Love is hard to define let alone quantify. We have credit w/o a love loophole or anything approaching it. We dont have a Love bank.

That was from my dad btw.. I shouldn't take credit for what he told me.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

My father says that the reason why it was so easy for Madoff to do what he did is because people have their love (translation) like their bank account.. if their bank account is low they automatically think their (love account) is also low.

My father told me a story that happened to him and I'm going to try as best as I can to tell it here.

Penny said...

Somewhere along the line, an age-old, workable formula seemed to go wrong.

Or not?

The next best thing to making something of value is purchasing something cheaper than you ever dreamed possible without getting "dirty".

Penny said...

And the next best thing after that is maybe making a few tweeks on someone else's idea and...voila!

We call that "added value", and there are few of us who aren't suckers for that. More for the same cost? Hey! All in!

You could even count me in if you give me the same thing I've always bought at a cheaper price.

Penny said...

Sounds almost like a SALE!

And who among us doesn't know that NOW is the time to take advantage of a "limited time offer"?

lol

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

My father asked me - you remember Don Isidro? Don Isidro had a big super store in Santo Domingo in our neighborhood. After a little prodding I remember.. I remember we had an account.. I remember my step mom sending me to get little things w/o money.. I was about seven years old.

My father told me he never lost touch with Don Isidro. And then one day Don Isidro call him here in the US.. He had lost the business taking care of his wife, Dona Amantina - cancer.. and now she had died and he could not afford to bury her..

My father said I'm sending you the cost of the burial but if you can delay it one day until I get there I want to be there.. he did and my father was there for the funeral.

Don Isidro survived the bad times and now my father says that when he goes there is unbelievable.. Don Isidro doesnt know what or where to put my father.. he is so grateful.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

its not like my father is going to need him... the thing is that when we need him Don Isidro had been there for us.

Easy Credit makes people anonymous.

Easy Credit is impersonal.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

anyway I have to go.

I have people waiting in NYC that are going to drive me to the airport in about six and one half hours.

Penny said...

This "stuff" keeps a whole helluva lot of people working.

Some few work to save their money. Way more work to buy things, and then pay off their debt as they agreed.

So that's not the problem with extending credit.

Or is it?

Beth,

The remote system I use, "Logmein.com" announced new features designed for use with the Ipad as soon as it came out. I use Logmein nearly everyday to work on my office computer from home and vice versa. With a broadband connection I sometimes forget that I'm working remotely. It's near perfect. It's a web based system. You log into the site and access it through there.

I don't have an Ipad yet, but if I get one, that will be one of my main uses for it too.
