"I hope he dies."

I'm impressed that it took 12 comments before anyone at Politico said that (or anything like that) after a report that Rush Limbaugh has been hospitalized with chest pains and is in "serious" condition.

ADDED: Much re-tweeted at Twitter: "The people calling for Rush Limbaugh to die are the same people who ask to control your healthcare."

AND: Rush Limbaugh has said on his show many times that once the government runs health care, there is a threat that life-or-death decisions will be made based on politics, and people will worry that if they  criticize the government or espouse the wrong opinions decisions will go against them.

God Bless Rush.

Gosh, I hope he's OK. It sure would stink to have heart problems after losing all that weight.

BTW, people who hope for others to die simply because they disagree with their political beliefs, even if they only express that hope tongue in cheek, are complete assholes.

Prayers said for Rush Limbaugh.

I'd do the same for Barack Obama, by the way, had he been taken to the hospital. Humanity and compassion should trump ideology when someone is ill or injured.

Very few people over at Politico are being mean-spirited, and you know there are soooo many people who would love to have Rush off the radio.

People are behaving well. Give them credit.

"It sure would stink to have heart problems after losing all that weight."

He lost a lot of weight quickly. That might not be the healthiest way. And you don't know what methods he used. They might have been dangerous.

Michael Haz said...

Craig, stop back when Sullivan or Maddow are reported to have been taken to a hospital and see what is said by the non-trolls here.

Until then, don't presume.

Ann Althouse said...

Does it seem unusual to you that the news that he was rushed to the hospital and that he is in serious condition came out simultaneously? That is really worrying me.

Ann Althouse said...

Michael Hasenstab has it exactly right.

MayBee said...

I don't know, Ann. Serious condition seems to be the new default condition. Tiger and his mother-in-law were both said to be in serious condition, only to be released in hours.

Hoping for the best for Rush.

Good point, Althouse.

Re: Michael Hasenstab- I've never really prayed for entertainers, but I do pray for the President, and other leaders, frequently, and I think that all believers should. Mostly, I pray for them to have wisdom and leadership, and to help improve lives.

One of the commenters over there wondered if his rapid, dramatic weight loss had anything to do with it. I hate to say it, but I know of two people who had fatal heart attacks after a quick loss of 50 pounds or more. One was Orson Welles, the other (known to me personally) was a great jazz guitarist named George Barnes, who was only 56. Apparently it can be dangerous to crash weight off like that.

Michael Haz said...

"Serious condition" is the default setting for anyone with any type of heart issue, major or minor. The status will change as the diagnosis is made at the hospital.

Post surgical heart patients are described as "critical" for 24 hour or so, even if they are talking and breathing on their own.

The news reports are a bit confusing because the source of the pronouncement is not identified. EMTs and paramedics usually don't establish the condition, MD's do, so "taken to the hospital in serious condition" may not be accurate.

Ann Althouse said...

@amba Yes, people feel alienated from their fat but it is part of their body, and you can't just lop it off brutally.

Ann Althouse said...

Thanks for the encouragement about "serious." I won't take it seriously.

The comments at Politico have gotten a lot nastier since this post went up. Skimming over them, it really makes me sad for humanity how many people have only hate and wishes for suffering, yet claim that this is OK, because (without qualification), Rush or "republicans" are "hate-mongers."

Some claimed that (unnamed persons that probably reside in their heads) were horrible about Ted Kennedy's death, so they have the right to be about Rush's suffering. Not only is this absurd moral reasoning, it is, to the best of my memory, completely untrue. Every major commentator I heard re: Kennedy had thoughtful things to say, and the commenters that didn't almost only tried to remind people that he was not a hero. I can't recall anyone wishing for his death, nor for his pain and suffering, as is mentioned quite a bit on the Politico.

Am I remembering that correctly?

Michael Haz said...

The relationship between weight loss and heart attacks can cause an observer to draw a false-positive correlation.

An overweight person who loses weight could have heart disease that preceded the weight loss and presented after the weight loss. The cause may not have been the loss of the weight, but the years of carrying the weight (and the enabling habits).

When someone drops weight that quickly, how often is it in response to a medically based "lose weight or else!" either from a doctor or from the body itself?

Did he really lose weight that fast, or did it seem like he did because he actually lost it and because we don't see him every day?

I hope that Limbaugh is okay.

Synova: if trying to hold people accountable makes you feel uncomfortable, don't do it. However, you'll never get people to change by just letting them get away with it.

What I described above is what I attempt to do; for an example, see this listing. Each one of those links goes to another page, which in turn goes to one or more other pages where (in most cases, but not all) I show how the person listed isn't being truthful. The goal of that is to show up in search results for that person's name and let them know that they should start to tell the whole truth for once.

If reporters start seeing that the top search results for their names all point out how they lie, that will force them to change.

I'm somewhat circumspect about what I try to do because I don't want the competition, especially from those who'd use my techniques to fill the search results with content-free noise. At the same time, major bloggers are so incompetent that I don't need to worry about competition.

There's a significant element on the right that pushes the idea that Obama is not a legit prez, not a U.S. citizen, but is instead a Manchurian candidate into communism (one local talk show host calls him both a commie and the Anti-Christ). Do you think some of the people who listen to that stuff wouldn't be happy if harm came to Obama? Please.

Anyway, people are allowed to hate politicians, and they're allowed to vent a little even if they go too far when doing so. Let the people breathe a little, including letting them get some of their hate off their chests.

And sometimes politicians are hated for good reason. Because, you know, sometimes they do evil things. And, while in general I'd say the way to deal with a politician you hate is to try and beat him/her in the next election, there have been politicians I wouldn't exactly cry over if they came to harm.

I'd have to know why the person you talked to felt so strongly before I could condemn it. But, he probably was just getting carried away for effect. You shouldn't assume everyone who says something terrible about a public official really means it to the full extent they said it. We don't always look at leaders as also being regular human beings, you know.

And politicans know there will be people who will hate them. It comes with the job. But sometimes they're hated because they deserve to be hated....

Anyway, there are probably liberals involved with taking Rush to the hospital and treating him at the hospital. It's possible that a liberal is saving Rush's life as we speak.

Wishing death upon opponents is a clear part of far-left (i.e., not really old timey liberal) thinking; the targets are standing in the way of utopia and thus deserve having death (or the gulag) wished upon them.

I'm not sure pissing on someone's grave is the same as wishing them dead (especially when their death is imminent and inevitable). The former may be free speech. The latter is voodoo. Or "imprecatory prayer," which is what we learned it was called when one Pastor Wiley Drake was praying for Obama's death:

“Are you praying for his death?" Colmes asked Drake, referring to President Obama. "Yes," Drake replied. "So you're praying for the death of the president of the United States?" Colmes asked. "Yes." "You would like for the president of the United States to die?" Colmes asked once more. "If he does not turn to God and does not turn his life around, I am asking God to enforce imprecatory prayers that are throughout the Scripture that would cause him death, that's correct."

Drake says he regrets the media frenzy caused by the Colmes interview, but he stands by his use of imprecatory prayer, a form of prayer he says is biblically mandated -- an appeal to God that is, unlike most prayers, a request not for something positive but for misfortune, a kind of curse meant to fall on those considered evildoers.

Drake was praying Psalm 109: "May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow."

Are you saying Rush sold subscriptions (I guess to the Limbaugh Letter??) in order to fund an attempt to get his show broadcast to the military? Is that the nefarious scheme you are imaginating here? I have trouble telling.

(PS: Rush is broadcast to the troops because they polled said troops and he was overwhelmingly the most requested radio show. No nefarious schemes needed.)

We now return you to liberals trying to explain why them wishing death on people who disagree with them is totally fine.

Um, Rush's podcasts aren't "edited" in any substantive sense. The commercials are removed, and so is the music.

This is a scandal? How stupid.

I've been listening since 1992 and receiving the podcasts since 2007. He doesn't broadcast death wishes. That's just a lie.

Finally, for the umpteenth time, Rush very rarely ever talked about drugs or drug laws. The fact that every single instance can be quoted in a paragraph or two really ought to put to rest the lie that he made his career out of being some kind of anti-drug crusader.

What the hell is "the recovery community"?

Is this like other "communities" that are made up of only politically liberal sufferers and that only provide support to politically liberal persons while pretending that they are not political at all, but about "recovery?"

Now, presumably, Rush never *promoted* drug use. Do "recovery communities" promote drug use? Or do "recovery communities" say that drugs are harmful and addictive? Did Rush portray drugs as NOT harmful and addictive?

At what point does saying drugs are *bad* lead to a "recovery community" being all joyful and vindictive when a person becomes addicted to prescription pain meds?

It doesn't.

And I'm calling BS on our new, formally drug addled friend. Hating Rush Limbaugh is an exercise that requires the application of no facts at all, just made up monster memes. Those are impervious to reason, only perception... because someone said something and it *sounded* true.

Every single time this "monster" is brought out into the light and his actual recorded words, and there are decades of them, are examined, what *sounded* so true, turns out not to be true at all.

Maybe what the "recovery community" should be pissed off about is being emotionally manipulated and yanked about by people who don't care about what is true or not, but only about finding scapegoats and people to transfer responsibility to... because getting screwed over by people who pretend to be on your side when you're vulnerable is doing real harm and might even be evil.

Michilines, you don't have to pretend like you would provide examples to back up your claims. Many people have tried to slander Rush for years and so a simple Google search should be able to provide you with the most damaging quotes that you claim Rush has made. And if he has indeed made such comments, it would be out there, believe me. Yet you cannot seem to provide evidence even that way. Why? Because it doesn't exist, plain and simple. The worst anyone is able to produce is Rush saying that it ruins families and that the offender should go to jail.

Conversations with nearly anyone on the left about Rush Limbaugh seems to result in tales of mythical proportions about what Rush has said.

If Rush has no time for addicts, it may well be in the same sense he has no time for people on welfare who figure they've found a home in the system because it drags down the country and society.

He was on drugs and on welfare and had the courage to kick both. Having been there/done that, he knows how pernicious both are and doesn't have much sympathy for those who don't feel any great need to change their lives. Those who want to change, but need a hand, I'm sure he supports.

That's not evil or mean. I've known a couple of former addicts; they hate the stuff and have no time for those who want to tell everybody how cool it is. Whether the people who would be enablers for those still hooked, so they can justify their particular agenda, are evil or mean, I leave to the commenters here.

"# "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back."

Rush Limbaugh acknowledged making these statements in a 1990 Newsday article"

AL does not believe that medical decisions will be politicized if/when gov't runs healthcare.

This is so _____________ I don't know what to say about it. But I managed not to curse online.

Such restraint.

rdkraus, you can't make a coherent defense of a loony idea, but you should get points for not simply reverting to cussing.

Now, maybe you could try to show how the Medicaid or Medicare to show "medical decisions will be politicized if/when gov't runs healthcare."

Plenty of experience there to point to!

Really, gang, this is a crazy accusation. Please elaborate on how this system would work.

That's easy, because it already happened, with the recent controversy regarding the change in recommendations for routine mammograms for women in their 40s.

The firestorm that erupted resulted in a quick reversal. That is, medical decisions were politicized.

Re losing lots pof weight, the thing to remember is that many people who lose lots of weight are doing so after being told that they have a serious halth problem that requires losing lots of weight.

Also, sometimes shit just happens.

AL, are you ever in a good mood?

Well speaking for myself I can admit to being undisturbed by such
rhetoric although I do find interesting the cognitive dissonance of a group that prides itself on tolerance to express such spittle-flecked hatred over someone's political beliefs. I'll wager that a fair portion of them hoping for Limbaugh's death have a 'Free Mumia' t-shirts.

Re: Finn's site (http://www.cjr.org/the_observatory/limbaugh_suggests_nyts_revkin.php) about asking some guy to just kill himself-

I did find the site (not sure why others couldn't), and the quote is there, but

Anyone who read it in context and was smart enough to tie his shoes would see that Rush was not wishing death on the guy, he was pointing out the environmental movement's hypocracy. He was talking about one of those "humanity is a plague on mother earth" morons, and pointing out that his own ideology should suggest that he kill himself.

In other words, sorry, wrong answer, try again.

Well Mr. Hasentaub, it would appear that you can either be undisclosed or not and no one is either immune nor safe from a Google so it really doesn't matter a great deal if you go private or public or try to hide under a blanket in your garage.

Although, just for fun, wondering why BEN hit a near 52 week high after you left?

I never saw anything like that, but it is noted. That guy = also an asshole.
