"I hope to be up half the night trying to write a post on the great mystery of the stories about Trig, stories that have bedeviled the blogosphere and many others for months."

The main person these "stories" have "bedeviled" is Andrew Sullivan.
There is no proof here of anything, but there is a much more nuanced and detailed narrative of the events (especially now we have Palin's first considered version of the events since the campaign) that when taken together has definitely helped illuminate what was once obscure and, well, bizarre. Believe it or not, it makes a little more sense now.
Andrew, read what you've written. Step back and read it with the eyes of someone who has never heard of you. You sound like a raving conspiracy theorist. Like this guy (from the movie "Slacker"):

In the comments on my post yesterday about Sullivan's decision to go silent to "grapple with this new data" that's "so complicated" he "simply [couldn't] focus, here's chuck b.:
He says the same thing about her all the time. Unhinged grip on reality, deeply disturbed, fantastic story about her fifth pregnancy... yes, yes. Will there be anything new?

I continue to visit his blog (judge me as you will), and it's becoming sad, but I notice a few things...

For example, reality is a particularly big concept for him. Objective reality, reality checks, version of reality, actual reality, current reality. You can find all reality cliches all over the place. I just checked, the word appears 10 times on just the first page of his blog.
Come back, Andrew. Back to the reality that calls you.

Andrew is showing real signs of mental illness with this (and I don't mean this comment polemically). He is obsessesd, delusional, and now isolative. Various diagnoses are possible, but there is something going very wrong.

He's a dope head with AIDS and dementia.

Please leave Andrew alone.

Would you punch a retarded person, Ann? I think you would not. And yet, you persist in bringing attention and ridicule to Andrew Sullivan's mental health problems.

Shame on you, Ann.

While the blogosphere has been the perfect medium for some writers and thinkers, it has been the ruin of Sullivan. He has exhausted his talent and runs now on fumes. Sad.

Sullivan's endless fascination with Palin's genitals, which both attract and repel him, and his obscure mission regarding Trig, suggest that he has become Captain Ahab aboard the Daily Dish Pequod.

Who says chronic pot-smoking isn't hazardous to your health?

"The White Whale swam before him as the monomaniac incarnation of all those malicious agencies which some deep men feel eating in them, till they are left living on with half a heart and half a lung.
...All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby-Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it.

To repeat my earlier comment in response to Althouse's question: "This is pure speculation, but I wonder if Palin has threatened to sue Sullivan for defamation?"

Shouldn't Trig Palin, not Sarah, sue Andrew Sullivan for defamation?

Trig is not a public figure.

The scope of Sullivan's discovery is likely to be much more limited.

Sullivan's claims of illegitimacy have damaged the reputation of this vulnerable child in the community.

If not defamation, couldn't Palin sue in a "false light" jurisdiction?

I continue to hold out hope that this man rights his sinking mental ship, but every day, as his obsessions mounts in intensity, it becomes difficult to find one iota of sympathy for him.

Like many people, I've met Holocaust deniers and "we didn't go to the moon"-type sceptics. Usually these are anti-Establishment types, who doubt everything coming from those opposing their particular world view.

In the case of Sarah Palin and Andrew Sullivan (and other rabid anti-Palinists), I think it's a question of wanting to prevent her from becoming the Establishment, to prevent her power to further her brand of conservatism on the nation.

The first variety of conspiracist, therefore, is post-facto, whereas in Sullivan's case it's pre-emptive.

Conspiracists of any variety are a sad, vain lot who think they know better, who give themselves airs that THEY at least, won't have the wool pulled over their eyes unlike the sheeple of the world.

Personally, as a Brit, he embarrasses me.

Sullivan has become a classic psychotic, apparently driven from reality by the force of Sarah Palin's personality that not only bears children but actually loves them. I suspect that his psychosis is a defense mechanism against actually loving her by insisting that she is not real. May God have mercy on the lost boy Andrew.

I don't understand the giddy fascination with Sullivan's perverse Sarah Palin obsession.

It is it really worth blogging about? Or rather, would Sullivan's obsession be blog-worthy if it were about a woman other than Sarah Palin?

If Sullivan were obsessed with the "fact" that Chelsea Clinton's face looks more like Web Hubble's than Bill Clinton's, and wrote seemingly every other column about it, would he still be interesting?

Probably not.

Slate can deal with Sullivan's irrationality, his illness, his self-gratifying fantasies about Sarah Palin's uterus, if it wants.

But the rest of us should be able to see that it's nothing more than a pervert's Munchausen By Proxy aimed snarkily and sniggeringly at a conservative woman, just because she is, and that so-called feminists tacitly tolerate and encourage it.

Ann Althouse is an internet newb. She doesn't realize that one can criticize Andrew Sullivan without actually linking to his moronic ravings.

Linking to Andrew helps get his words to a larger audience, Ann.

Stop. Linking. Andrew.

The good news is that he has AIDS and the US Immigration service is obliged to deport him back to his own country so he can't infect any more of us with his putrid disease, the symptoms of which are manifested in his mad ravings about a distant woman's uterus.

"It is it really worth blogging about?"

Andrew Sullivan is a member of Journo-list - a group of prominent journalists who meet secretly and decide how they're going to attack any electable Republicans using their positions in the mainstream media.

He's just doing what he's paid to do by the Atlantic. It makes perfect sense to him since it's his job to do this.

He's not an uninterested observer. He's paid to attack Sarah Palin and to do nothing else. Any other posts are incidental to his job.

Anonymous said...

Ann Althouse wrote: "If I were using this post for page views, I'd have a Google-friendly title like "Andrew Sullivan is crazy to think Sarah Palin is crazy."

Ann, the theory is that you're purposely generating publicity for Andrew - to increase Andrew's page hits.

Which appears to be a correct analysis, since you're not required to link to these crazed ravings. Doing so only increases his Google presence and generates advertising revenue for The Atlantic and ensures Sullivan's employment.

You seem to want to keep him employed. Otherwise, you wouldn't encourage people to leave your own website and send them to his web page with a link.

Free speech is one of those things that makes this country exceptional. Going PC must be a temptation for Ann, especially when she gets comments that attack her personally.

The whole purpose of PC and "hate speech" laws appears to be the suppression of anything that can be ruled by the powers to be offensive - much of which turns out to be in opposition to the agenda of the PC crowd. Ann deserves a lot of credit for not going that route.

In defamation, you don't need to show personal outrage. It's reputation in the community. Or, alternatively, false light. In fact, Trig's inability to speak is an advantage.

Guardian or Next Friend
The individual in whose name a minor's lawsuit is brought, or who appears in court to represent such minor's interest. The French term prochein ami has been used to designate such an individual, but the term Guardian Ad Litem is more commonly used.

At Common Law, when an individual was unable to look after his or her own interests or manage his or her lawsuit, the court would appoint a person to represent that individual's legal interests. In court terminology this person was called a next friend, which is derived from the French term prochein ami. Individuals requiring a next friend included minors, persons who were mentally ill or mentally retarded, infirm or senile persons, and others whose disabilities prevented them from managing their affairs.

He should step back and chill out because he is giving the anti-Palin brigade a bad name and hes making a fool of himself. A pity because the Palin stuff aside, I tend to find his blog quite interesting. Im sure im in a very tiny minority here on that point.
I must also note the fact that some posters here are responding to Sullivan's abusive language here by...being even more abusive themselves. Florida's posts for example are absolutely pathetic.

I think Sullivan is fascinating to some of us, because back in the early days, his was a blog, like instapundit, that I checked every day. And then it slowly went off the deep end and now look at the insanity that pours forth from his mouth!

I know I have probably said this in every related thread, but odds wise it is pretty darn likely that a forty something woman would have a down syndrome baby, versus a 17 year old. Andrew has decided to buck science, and buck common sense, to come up with a thoroughly insane, untrue conspiracy theory about, of all things, the birth of a woman’s child. It is a trainwreck and every time he posts again I just can’t believe it. WTF!

But please, for the love of god, stop relating this to his being gay or having AIDS because it just makes you look just as insane. He is obsessed with a woman and focuses on her baby and your are obsessed with his sexual life. Both are absurd.

It makes me think of a mob chasing the village idiot through the streets, throwing stones and laughing. You don't have to admire the village idiot to wonder why the mob is having so much fun.

Further, I agree with Victoria about the homophobia that shows up in so many of the comment threads here. It's ugly and unnecessary and it keeps more rational commenters away -- and as Ann knows even if some of her commenters don't, Constitutional freedom of speech has nothing to do with it.

Andrew Sullivan is the lead blogger on all things Sarah Palin. It's a dirty job but someone had to do it. (And his compilation of Palin's many lies is quite useful -- people should thank him for going to the trouble.)

Is he obsessed? Of course. And this is a big week for him. Palin's got a book out, Palin's doing media interviews all over, and Andrew found out that Palin reads his blog every day! (He can now say she's obsessed with him, too!!)

His obsession goes a little overboard, but he's also had a lot of success with it. Not just in bringing eyeballs to his site, but also in having a real world impact on Sarah Palin's political career and how people think about her. That's one of the reasons Palin fans calls him a deranged lunatic. He has drawn some blood.

And if any blogger manages to unearth something that takes her comletely down once and for all, it most likely will be Andrew. And I know he dreams of that moment which will probably never come. And so what?

In my judgment, his blog has brought people closer to the truth about Sarah Palin whereas most of the blogs calling him a nutcase have also tried to advance a phoney image of Palin. So which are the bloggers who should really check themselves?

The fact is, Andrew is entirely correct to worry about a Republican Party that thought Sarah Palin was fit for the Presidency. He might be a little nutty but he's just a blogger. Sarah Palin is hella nutty and she wanted to be a heartbeat away from the presidency to potentially become the most powerful person on earth.

Jon said...

@El Hombre

Here is an example from Sullivan's supposed list of Palin lies:

*******************************
The Odd Lies Of Sarah Palin XV: Her Israeli Flag

Here's Palin doing her usual make-it-up routine with Shimon Peres:

"I wanted to meet you for many years," Ms. Palin told Mr. Peres, according to an aide to the president. "The only flag at my office is an Israeli flag," she was quoted as saying, "and I want you to know and I want Israelis to know that I am a friend."

Er: there are several flags in recent photographs of her office, including the American and Alaskan flags, as one would expect. She meant the only foreign flag, presumably.
*********************************

So although even Sullivan can discern that she "presumably" meant foreign flag ... he still calls it a "lie" anyway.

Sorry, Pogo, but I disagree from two different perspectives. The first is that everybody should engage in safe sex so Andrew certainly is to blame for becoming HIV positive. (Your cryptic final sentence at the end of your first paragraph suggests that perhaps you agree.)

Secondly, if Andrew has ADC (which in fairness to Scott, is speculative), then (1) this certainly explains what we've seen in his writing and there is nothing else obvious that does, and (2) I feel no differently about it than I would feel about those who sustain brain injuries from athletes who specialize in heading soccer balls or spearing opponents with their helmet on a football field or boxing.

In fact, if you told me that someone had suffered a stroke and their writing was no longer as insightful as previously, plus they were caught up in strange obsessions, I would feel about the same as I feel towards Sullivan -- sorry for him, but no longer interested in what they have to write.

Is Sully known to have suffered a stroke? Was he in a motorcycle accident without a helmet? Is there anything other than ADC that offers explanatory power.

He's run for president multiple times and is completely vetted. I wouldn't lose sleep at night worrying that he'd do something completely wacko, or that he has no idea what he's doing at all.

Give em hell Florida.

Much better than a vile ass.

But an ass leaking milky loads is sort of vile in its own way.

Unless you like that sort of thing.

I'd bet Florida has a great rack. Kind like that Althouse chick, only perkier>

What makes him a pervert? I don't know enough about his particular sexual practices to label him a "pervert."

His public solicitations of anonymous, unprotected sodomy are common knowledge. If you don't know enough, why comment?

Beth said...

Nomilk, that may be irresponsible, but what makes it perverted?

Ask and you shall receive.

That's nothing unusual, nomilk. It's just sex. You persistently resist defining perversion. I suspect that's because you mean that gay sex is perverted sex.

And it's a loathsome swipe at gays to suggest that Sullivan's writings relate to AIDS; mockery of the ill is abhorrent.

Sullivan offers numerable beliefs deserving of ridicule without descending to the odious.

They do it routinely in these comment sections. Even after they scandalized this blog when Sullivan shined a spotlight into the comment sections one day.

But what do you expect? It is encouraged by the leading right-wing bloggers. As one small example from today, Insta-pundit linked to an item about Sullivan that he called an "unforgettable classic" and it includes this:

----
"Inspector Loads, do you use marijuana frequently?"

"Depends. Is five or six times a day frequent?"

"Are you on any HIV medications that might cause delusions or hallucinations?"

"Who isn't? Why do you ask?"
----

Instapundit has never been interested in getting to the truth about Sarah Palin. He's always just promoted the hype about her. And he quietly encourages his readers to run with the "Sullivan is crazy because of his HIV" theory. Other right-wing blogs more overtly promote that theory about Andrew Sullivan.

I've never seen instapundit mention Sullivan having HIV. Care to provide a link?

Wow, you must be some date.

Beth said...

Sorry, nomilk, I'm out of the dating pool, in a 15-year relationship. But I'm not prone to calling people perverted just because they have sex with other consenting adults.

Why do you find gay male sex so fascinating?

And once again, you've declined to actually define "pervert."

Sullivan jumped the shark several years ago. His illness and the medications prescribed to treat his condition(s) are probably responsible for his bizarre obsession and inability to be rational.

He is bitter because he is dying. He isn't coping. He obviously resents Palin because she represents the life he can't have.

I have some compassion for Sullivan, so count me on a side who believes it's most considerate to allow him to go out quietly without notice.

The homophobic comments don't cause me to avoid Althouse at all. You take the bad with the good.

The freaks only puke it up for shock value-to draw a reaction. Cock? Gay? Anus? Gasp! How shocking!

Am I shocked? Offended? No. The words have lost their power to offend, which is probably why word-vomiters become increasingly obnoxious. Cocks become dicks, breasts become tits, etc--a never/ending attempt to score points in the fame-game.

Such whores!

In high school, our cross country team called itself the "thin-clad perverts", or "thinverts" for short.

Had t-shirts made and everything.

When my mom asked me what it meant, I lied and said "Idunno".

There's a funny yearbook photo of 5 of us wearing it. Whatta hoot we were!

Thanks for letting me share my moment of adolescent glory, albeit plebeian and sophomoric.

He doesn't say it, but he links to people who do. As he did today -- the link he refers to as an "unforgetable classic".

It's a creative piece. But there's stuff in there making fun of Sullivan's sexual orientation For example, an S&M scene where Sullivan hires a male prostitute to torture him Abu Ghraib style for his sexual pleasure. Thus making fun of Sullivan's anti-torture position as well as his sexual orientation -- I guess suggesting that Sullivan has a deranged and sexually fueled obsession about torture as well as about Sarah Palin).

And, this line: "I may have taken more balls to the chin than Minnie Minoso, but we both know I'm still the best goddamn forensic political vaginologist on the entire force."

And the bit that makes fun of his HIV, suggesting HIV drugs made him crazy (see my previous comment).

I'm not saying it's not a funny piece of satire. But it's pretty mean-spirited and it does encourage people to attack Sullivan on his sexuality and HIV status. And that was part of Instapundit's pushback today against Sullivan -- to dig up that old link and encourage people to hit Sullivan on his sexuality and HIV status.

And on his anti-torture position, which also annoys the hell out of the right-wing bloggers mostly because Sullivan is winning that debate just as he's winning the Palin debate.

So, of course they diagnose Andrew Sullivan as being mentally sick and obsessed to an unhealthy degree on the torture issue as with Palin. It seems like any time a blogger makes the right-wingers feel uncomfortable with some of the things and people they are backing, they feel they have to prove that that blogger is just a mentally sick nutcase and they needn't examine themselves.

It couldn't possibly be that people who want the USA to torture, or people who want Sarah Palin to be President of the United States, Commander in Chief, and Leader of the Free World, are the sickos!

If Google had been around back then I would have told my mom that
"The Thinvert application system combines an innovative nozzle design and an effective spray fluid into a system which allows the effective application of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and plant growth regulators at low spray volumes. It maximizes spray effectiveness, while minimizing off-target movement by reducing spray drift and virtually eliminating spray evaporation."

Continuing to play 'gotcha' with Andrew Sullivan is sorta like hunting blind, three-legged puppies with a sledgehammer; it's just too easy, and the thrill wears off eventually.

He's just jealous that she looks better in Kenneth Cole pumps than he does.

Andrew, as a non-breeder, seems to be confused about childbearing.

Only men can be confused about who exactly is their child.

Women know exactly who is their child.

Methinks he failed his biology O levels.
