The News from 1930.

A new blog — similar to my (abandoned) project The Time That Blog Forgot.

The true power of the internet isn't just its ability to let us know what's happening right now, but also what's happened in the past.

Looks interesting. Here's a fun fact from 1930:

"Over 20 million homes, or 70% of homes in the US, have electric service"

It's a great idea to bring back the "experts" opining in real time news and essays in 1930 after the 1st Great Crash of capitalism to illustrate the present one.

Another "why didn't someone think of that different, almost obvious insight, sooner??" - for Freakonomics.

I know it was 1933-34 before the fact we were in a Depression was acknowledged. Before that, it was for both Hoover and FDR - about getting America prosperous again in quick order after the right tinkering happened to the markets and banks.

They differed only in saying everything would be quickly fixed by the wise men of Wall Street or by the genius of Government functionaries and plutocrats like Baruch, Morgenthau, Joe Kennedy who traded in wealth-making for a few years to get great personal power under FDR.

Althouse are you going to go see Public Enemies?

It is supposed to be good.

Go Columbus.

Although, I do have to say I was a little disappointed in Columbus. Many of the businesses were closed up when I was there. I hate to see that in any town or city.

Now Green Lake, where I went a couple of weekends ago is adorable. I like Lake Geneva too. Kind of touristy but I like it. And I like Argyle and Mount Horeb, very cute.

I think my favorite is Baraboo. It is so dam cute. Love the square. Montello is cute too with the waterfall. I went through the Dells and ate at Monks, good burgers-not as good as Plaza though. Dells is very red neck and I kind of like that.

And Dubuque is kind of cute too. Really revitalized, love that.

And don't forget Bayfield and Minocqua, cute and lots of fish. And there's Hurley and Hayward and St. Croix Falls. And Spooner and Sparta and Tomah and Mauston too. And Black River Falls and Marathon.
And Fennimore, Richard Center, Prairie Du Chien, Dodgeville and Darlington and Cuba City and Mineral Point, natch.

And Bloomer and Ladysmith and Chippewa Falls and Bruce and Cadott and Cable and Chetek and Weyerhauser and Park Falls. The mighty Chip goes through Eau Claire and the mighty Mississippi through LaCrosse.

I don't know the Oshkosh, Appleton area much. I went to a gay bar in Appleton when I was like 16 and afterwards went to this guy's house that had a hot tub party-totally depressing. They were playing Jody Watley-I remember that.

Racine, Kenosha pretty depressing. Went to a gay bar in Kenosha and did it in a car in the late 80's.

Oh and Onalaska. And Depere and Neenah (famous for a place where trannies go for sexchanges, sick).

Wausau and Stevens Point boring.

Superior depressing but has a sex club, believe it or not.

Rice Lake, kind of pretty.

Algoma, River Falls and Menomonie on your way to the twin cities.

Hudson on the border.

Sauk Prairie kind of cute on the Wisconsin River. Reedsburg, Richland Center, Fon du Lac.

Madison suburbs are gross though. Bedroom communities, no character. Waunakee, Sun Prairie, Verona, Oregon, McFarland, Fitchburg, Middleton, Deforest.

Palymra, Eagle River, Delafield, Elkhorn, Jefferson, Fort Atkinson, Johnson City, Lake Mills, Waterloo, Cambridge, Brooklyn, Whitewater, Beloit, Janesville, Evansville, Edgerton, Stoughton.

Milwaukee suburbs boring.

Poynette, Pardeeville, Lodi, Dane, Morrisonville, Arena, Spring Green, Mazomanie, Cross Plains, Black Earth.

And then there is Westfield, Briggsville, Gays Mills, Little Chute, Pewaukee, West Allis, Platteville, Waupon, Wautoma, Green Field, Cudahy, Darien, Cudahy, Cedarburg, Mequon, Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls.

And Monroe, famous for cheese.

I did it at a Rest Area in Shawano once.

Beaver Dam, Oakfield, Grafton, and that is all for now.

I have never been a fan of Door County though. It tries too hard. It's Wisconsin we want fish fries not fish boils.

Before anyone bitches i know Dubuque is in Iowa. I lived there one summer and taught a drum corps!

Speaking of 1930, a drum and bugle corps is doing a show entitled 1930 this year, the Blue Devils from Concord, Califorinia. The show is amazing!

Wow, the Redsox just lost 11-10 after leading the game 10-1.

I just want to rub it in Lem's face. I always hate it when he mentioned anything about the Sox on this blog. :)

Maureen Dowd is on fire.

The one thing the bitch can do is editorialize about affairs.
