Nice depth of field, Althouse.

I got the alergies very bad. Got some homeopathic pills from a friend for later tonight.

Trees are shedding polen like mad here.

Lem said...

No more trees Althouse.

Please.

Ann Althouse said...

Lem, don't be stupid. Homeopathy is stupid.

Lem said...

This friend at work swears by it

Lem said...

Something from Hyland's Homeopathy.

Did you try professor? It sounds like you try homeopathy and it didnt work.

Lem said...

This guy has a daughter with his wife and they didn't gave her any vaccination when she was little.

He says he doesn't believe in them.

john said...

Lem,

It only works if you believe it works. For homeopathy to really be effective:

tap you heels together 3 times and say after me ....

Quayle said...

When we lived in Germany my wife was having trouble breathing because of the pollen, and our next door neighbor came over with a remedy:

Cut up cloves of garlic in chocolate ice-cream (to help it down.)

It didn't work.

But our neighbor swore by it.

ElcubanitoKC said...

Lem, and you are taking remedies from that guy. Me matas, hermano!

Homeopathy has always been at best suspicious to me. Although, I did have to take a lot of cocimientos y tisanas prepared by both my mami and my abuela. However, they never substituted science with them, they "supplemented" them, or so they taught me.

Oh Look the last time in recent history any party had a filibuster proof majority-

No guys on the thread below Republicans did not have a filibuster proof majority in early 2000.

Again the magic number is S-I-X-T-Y.

Got that!

Anyways the last time in recent history either party had a filibuster proof majority-

The 70's

YUUUUUUUCCCCCK!

94th Congress (1975-1977)
Majority Party: Democrat (60 seats)
Minority Party: Republican (38 seats)
Other Parties: 1 Conservative; 1 Independent
Total Seats: 100
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
95th Congress (1977-1979)
Majority Party: Democrat (61 seats)
Minority Party: Republican (38 seats)
Other Parties: 1 Independent
Total Seats: 100

Ya pickled side winders!

Quayle said...

Oh, and I forgot the best one:

she came over one time with a carved up potato and told my wife to put it in her ear.

I can't remember what that was supposed to cure, but it didn't work either.

john said...

For vaccinations to be effective in a community you need about 75% participation, IMS. So that's 25% idiots getting the benefit of others intellegence, willingess to see and do what's best for family and community, and knowledge that their kids need protection from the potentially disease-laden children of those idiots. It's a wonderful thing how everyone benefits.

madawaskan said...

Sorry but the thread went over 200.

I protest the threads over two hundred.

Oh you want homepathy that worked?

My grandmother would make us tie one of our uncle's used hockey socks around our neck if we complained about having a cold.

Instant cure!

Think about it...

The difference is that this time around, the media feedback cycle is much shorter, meaning the party in power has the ability to personally destroy any potential challengers long before they become a political threat. Also, by the time this administration is up for re-election, a historically huge portion of the entire GDP will be under the control of the party in power - from banks to manufacturers to entire service sectors - such that no potential challenger could ever hope to match them in resources.

The guy working alone with his ball cap on looks pretty cool. I know how you have a thing for cap-wearing guys.

I hope he doesn't come over and try to chat you up. But you'll show him your ring, I'm sure. I hate feeling jealous.

Stay away from these people. They're dangerous, and making the future more dangerous for the rest of us by providing their daughter as virus mutation fodder.

“Son of Sam” by Elliott Smith.

@Meade I was just thinking how different it felt to be sitting here alone now than a few months ago.

Homeopathic remedies:

Sitting on my porch I heard three young people who smoked discuss how to prevent lung cancer. One recomended rinsing your mouth with safflower oil; another pills from GNC; and a third smoking pot.

Now you know.

traditionalguy said...

I heard that Homeopathy gives you a little dose of a strong organic compound to stimulate the body and mind. The result is that you feel better. Now that the Professor has has taken a little dose of her baby's love, she feels alot better. Does this mean that Meade's love is a strong organic compound? Much more testing may be required by the Professor's scientific methods over many years to get the answer.

JAL said...

Lem If it dosent work, it doesn't work. Who really knows?
Believe it or not, some people can know some things.

As a start: http://tinyurl.com/homeopathyforlem

I'm with ElCKC. Don't be miserable.

Ann Althouse said...

"I heard that Homeopathy gives you a little dose of a strong organic compound to stimulate the body and mind."

You heard wrong. The dilution in those bottles is such that there is nothing at all in them. You are buying absolutely nothing. If you think absolutely nothing works, then save your money and do absolutely nothing.

Ann Althouse said...

Read or listen to this.

Don't be a fool.

Neo said...

You take something that might work, then dilute it to uselessness, then dilute it again, and next thing you know, you elect an empty suit.

It makes perfect sense.

Ann Althouse said...

"Dilutions of homeopathic products that are sold today usually range from 6X to 30X. This is homeopathy's system for measuring the dilution, and it doesn't mean 1 part in 6 or 1 part in 30. X represents the roman numeral 10. A 6X dilution means one part in 106, or one in one million. A 30X dilution means one part in 1030, or one followed by 30 zeros. A few products are even marketed using the C scale, roman numeral 100. 30C is 10030. That's a staggering number; it's 1 followed by 60 zeros, about the number of atoms in our galaxy."

Ann Althouse said...

"Let's look again at Avogadro's number. 6 × 1023 atoms is called a mole, a term any chemistry student is familiar with. How big is that number? Well, if you had 500 sheets of paper, you'd have a stack about two and a half inches high, like a ream that you'd buy at the stationery store. If you had 6 × 1023 sheets of paper, your stack would reach all the way from the Earth to the Sun. And not only that: it would reach that distance four hundred million times. Think about that for a moment. One sheet of paper, in a stack that's 400,000,000 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun. That's a typical homeopathic dilution. Sounds pretty potent, doesn't it?"

Jason (the commenter) said...

I wish I knew about homeopathy as a child. I would have loved to take my broccoli that way!

Neo said...

You were told there would be no math, right? And you are a girl, so you know math is hard, right?

"If you had 6 × 1023 sheets of paper" you would have 6,138 sheets of paper. A lot of paper, to be sure, but unless the sun is a lot closer than we suspect, then the stack is not going to make it all the way there.

Maybe it will go at night, then it won't catch fire.

Sofa King said...

Neo, that's supposed to be 6 * 10^23. I'm guessing the copy/paste stripped out the superscript. But surely you should have known Avogadro's number by heart, being so numerically literate?

Neo said...

As a matter of fact I do - but she wrote what she wrote.

Just doin' my bit.

Like you do yours.

Ann Althouse said...

I am guilty of cut and pasting.

Big Mike said...

If you took high school chemistry and passed -- or even just stayed awake -- you'd know Avogadro's number.

There's an easier way to explain homeopathy. The original substance is so diluted that the probability is much less than 50-50 that there exists even one molecule of that substance in the resulting mixture.

Excuse me, Professor, but did you listen to the advice of legal counsel before you admitted to being guilty? ;-)

May I offer the services of an ancient fraternal organization of Sicilians to solve your hateful jealous feelings. We are in the resolution and transfiguration business. We will resolve your problem and transfigure it into various forms; Cadillac music, cement structures, land fill, compost, building foundations, and waste. We believe in Greenie Weenie processes, so you can be assured that your target of jealousy will be transfigured in an environmentally friendly manner.

If you have any questions, please contact us at:

We are sorry you have refused our offer. If you ever have any need of our services, please contact us. We would be more than willing to oblige. Since you are Ms Althouse's fiance, there will be no charge.

Did I mention we are also very talented magicians? We can make anyone and anything disappear; forever.
