"Although I thought Ann's Rush apologism was unseemly and unfounded, I have to say I basically agree with Jon Chait..."

Eve Fairbanks reflects on our Bloggingheads encounter and displays the high regard TNR folk have for other TNR folk.

And what exactly is Apologism? (Homophone fans see "Apollo jism.") Wikipedia says:
Apologism is the metaphysical philosophy that argues that it is wrong for humans to attempt to alter the conditions of life in the mortal sphere of influence. It is opposed to the idea that absolute "progress" is a desirable goal for the pursuit of human endeavors...

Apologism stands solidly in opposition to the metaphysics of meliorism, which states that absolute "progress" is the desirable goal of all human endeavors. Apologism is not to be confused with apologetics.
Oh, I'm sure it all makes sense over at TNR as explained by Jonathan Chait or some other genius. Over here, we will quaff the nectar of the gods and allow the unseemliness to rage on.

So, Ann, are you trying to catch a ride on Rush's coattails? Do you relish being a dittohead?

Ann, maybe you can clarify your earlier dittohead post:

What actions from the White House are Rush and you referring to? what are these attacks you reference?

I laugh that jism requires a disambiguation page.

Sometimes I think that the left needs a disambiguation page for Althouse.

Althouse may refer to:

A slang term for semen

Althouse (film), a 2003 Bollywood film

"Althouse", a song by the rock band Althouse from their self-titled debut album

Althouse Unlimited Clothing, a New Zealand clothing company which originated in 2001

The Alt House Synergy Movement

Ann, instead of Wikipedia, perhaps you should have consulted a dictionary:

a⋅pol⋅o⋅gist

1. a person who makes a defense in speech or writing of a belief, idea, etc.

Or, in this case, of a loudmouth buffoon.

Bob From Ohio said...

That is what she wanted to say but in fact did not. The word she used does not mean "making apologies".

What Rush was saying is that you don't fire up your base with policy wonkery. You fire them up by pointing out that the One Eve worships is mounting an assault on liberty.

I love that while one can't find the word "apologism" in a dictionary, there it is, right in Wikipedia with the standard disclaimer: "This article is missing citations or needs footnotes ... ."

That's pretty much what Fairbanks' post needs, since I don't happen to believe she so much missed the point Althouse was trying to make as that she wishes to if not recast it, then duck it.

Of course, in its own way, linking to Chait's post was a footnote, of sorts [in this case, functioning as a disclaimer].

Never negotiate for common ground with a Liberal Attack Team sent out to ridicule you until you have stopped talking in public. That was Steele's mistake. The ones who seek your destruction are not interested in peace until you have been destroyed.(E.g., the palestinian refugees refusing peace until Israel is destroyed)Just ignore them and keep talking about them in public. If your goal is to be loved by them, you are living out a fantasy offered by your enemy. Eventually your spoken truth will win the day again.

I thought Ann's Rush apologism was unseemly and unfounded

"Unseemly" seems like a rather strong word. And she says Althouse's opinions are "unfounded" but I don't remember Eve countering them.

She's saying as slyly as she can that she thinks Althouse a provincial fool. I guess this is how an intellectual handles an idea they don't agree with; they dismiss its originator.

And notice her use of "Ann" instead of Althouse. I know dogs with better manners, so I wont insult them by calling Eve what comes to mind.

Henry said...

Alan, what argument are you talking about? What is Fairbanks' actual point? Don't take away my scapegoat or I'll be offended?

The passage that Fairbanks speaks to is less about Althouse apologizing for Limbaugh as Fairbanks apologizing for the whole Republican party.

Althouse did say "grow a pair." Maybe that's what Fairbanks thought was unseemly.

Freeman Hunt said...

Meade said...

Speaking of unseemly and unfounded, read Jon Chait's attack on republicans and his characterization of what he calls the "conservative agenda:" If the economy is still terrible in 2012, Republicans will probably win, and if they do, they'll convince themselves they won because the public wants to cut taxes for the rich and privatize Social Security.

What Fairbanks, Chait, and their fellow Obama worshipers can't accept is responsibility for their own agenda. If the economy is in worse shape in 2012, it will be Obama's to own and it will likely have everything to do with growing a larger government, raising taxes, and spending money the government doesn't have.

Come on Eve, Jon, Barack, why not strap on a pair and own your own big government policies? What are you afraid of?

reader_iam said...

Well, Ann & Eve referred to each other by their first names in the actual BHTV episode, so I don't see how Eve's being rude in referring to Althouse as "Ann" in the Plank post. Why should Althouse's rules for commenters in Althouse's own space--an entirely different context--apply to Eve, writing at the Plank, after an encounter in which first names were entirely appropriate?

If you're going to argue words with Althouse, at least crack a dictionary. Nectar has four definitions (Webster's Unabridged), drink of the gods being the third usage.

"Drink of the gods" distinguishes what the gods drank to sustain themselves from the simple juice of a fruit or the nectar inside a flower. Althouse is correct in her usage and you found no pleonasm (Thesauri are great, aren't they?).

Joe said...

Is it your contention that "apologist" has nothing to do with "Apologism"?

It doesn't, except both are likely derived from the Greek work apologia (In the Classical Greek legal system two key technical terms were employed: the prosecution delivered the kategoria , and the defendant replied with an apologia. To deliver an apologia then meant making a formal speech to reply and rebut the charges. The modern word Apology is derived from apologia as well, but the meaning is essentially reversed.)

Apologism: the metaphysical philosophy that argues that it is wrong for humans to attempt to alter the conditions of life in the mortal sphere of influence.

Apologist: a person who makes a defense in speech or writing of a belief, idea, etc.

As Henry points out, the proper word would arguably be apologistism, though that does sound rather awkward.

Since this is the only usage that connects nectar and gods, it's obviously the one Ann had in mind. Michael,

This is not about anyone else -- just you.

Why try to change the subject? YOU wrote some nasty things on the Althouse Blog throuout the years -- and like the Liberals who always found another reason not to support President Bush "but this reason...", "But something else...","

The non-support of the GOP for a democratic president comes from actions such as yours who could not say TWO CIVIL COMMENTS with those who disagree with you.

It's not about 9/11. It's not about what i said. It's all about how you acted.

Well sure, most of what he posts is a repeat of my initial postings.

And we both know you also have a hard time distinguishing between left and right.

*Here's a test: Right now...in which hand are you holding your dick?

C'mon...QUICK!

Roberto said...

JSF - Since you apparently can't or did not read this the first time, let's give it another shot:

"JSF - As an aside, where where YOU when people here called anyone who didn't support the Iraq invasion or the wiretapping or the torture...traitors or un-American or anti-American? Do you consider such terms 'civil?'"

AND

You say: "...and like the Liberals who always found another reason not to support President Bush..."

The "liberals??" The man left office with a 25% approval rating. Are you saying liberals make up 75% of the population?

And you call yourself a professional?

I-don't-think-so.

JSF said...

Michael,

So why do you expect Republcians and Conservatives to support President Obama?

KCFleming said...

Forget the chi-square test. The null hypothesis is a bit murky, too.

Are you sure you got IRB approval?

It simply must be an experiment. No one can really be this boring, concrete, and incomprehensible all at once.

JSF - "So why do you expect Republcians and Conservatives to support President Obama?"

Right now I think every American should support him because of the worldwide economic situation we have. If he fails, we all fail...and he and the rest of the Democrats will pay the price.

But I'm not holding my breath.

The man has held office for a tad over 40 days and based on most of the comments here, and from many in Congress...they just don't want to give his administration any kind of a chance to succeed.

I don't think it's in our country's best interest, but then again, I voted for the man and support him.

Roberto said...

Ann Althouse-Limbaugh? No.

Roberto said...

Be careful.

Roberto said...

For those who are firmly against Obama's plans and feel he's the devil incarnate, once again you're in the minority:

WSJ/NBC Poll: When Will it be Obama’s Economy?

The vast majority of Americans, 84%, think the current economic conditions were inherited and not caused by President Barack Obama.

Further, the majority of respondents don’t believe Obama will be viewed as responsible for the economy’s state until much later in his term.

Asked at what point Obama will be “mostly responsible for the country’s economic conditions,”

25% said in one to two years...

18% said in two to three years...

23% said in more than three years.

Just 2% said Obama would shoulder the responsibility in his first six months in office.

And 13% said in the first year.

Roberto said...

And more:

WSJ/NBC Poll: Democrats Better to Get Country Out of Recession

By more than a two-to-one margin, Americans believe the Democratic Party is better suited to getting the country out of a recession over the Republican Party.

Almost half of all respondents, 48%, identified the Democratic Party...

While just one in five, or 20%, said the Republican Party.

Some 8% said both parties were equally qualified.

While 16% said neither party was qualified.

Comparatively, in December 1990 when the U.S. economy was also going through a recession, the Democratic and Republican parties tied at 33% when asked who was best to lead through a recession.

You might want to run that one by my wife.

*But I do appreciate the fact that you evidently spend time thinking about me.

JSF said...

Michael,

I see you want us to support President Obama -- our views be damned.

However, and I said this as a young Democrat who supported Mondale and Dukakis, say nice things about my guy, and I will return the favor.

Most partisan Democrats are saying, "Support President Obama," Fine. That is their (and your) right. But I can do something you cannot even fathom of doing:

Talking about three policies I support of every president. Last I checked, we only have one at a time. And the last 8 years proved that the partisan Democrats cannot put their partisanship away even for a second (Hello Daily Kos! Hello Gov. Dean! Hello Huffington Post!).

As a test (of which I will partake after you answer): Name 3 policies of the past TWO Presidents that you liked.

Even as I, a partisan Republican, will return the favor. I already have bets that you will not even try.

Remember, policies are a two way street. That's why words like "Logrolling" were invented.

KCFleming said...

Right now I think every American should support him because of .... If he fails, we all fail.

Cute.
But just like some people used to say about Bush, so, it's disingenuous to make that claim now.

I don't hope Obama fails, but I know his plan will fail. It'a an economic certainty. Hoping Obama succeeds id like hoping pigs fly.

Michael said...

Obama and others have been saying the day to day discussion of the stock market swings are not conducive or reflective of the long term goals of the stimulus plan. (Obama also said stocks P/E ratios are approaching levels that might spur the buying of stocks.)

And past performance is not indicative or guarantee of future performance yada yad yada.... yet people still gravitate to the stocks/funds that were the highest performers anyway, knowing that there is no guarantee because they are.... or used to be....willing to take that risk.

P/E levels are nice to look at when buying a stock, but more important is the consideration of.....

1.is the government going to tax the company to death and eliminate the E part of the equation?

2. is the government going to "nationalize" the firm and dilute my stock position or make it entirely worthless?

3.is the government going to be meddling and fiddling with the internal processes of the company? Telling the company what kind of cars or products they can make despite the actual consumer demand for OTHER products? Legislating stupid 'green' rules that make it unprofitable to do business?

4. is the government going to make it impossible to borrow money, inflate the cost of living and deflate the value of our currency?
"There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency."

Since the answers are yes, yes, yes and yes. Obama is farting blueberries out of his ass when he talks about P/E ratios and stock buying. What an idiot.

Roberto said...

JSF - "I see you want us to support President Obama -- our views be damned."

Look, I realize you want to bait me with this drivel, but this is exactly what I said:

"Right now I think every American should support him because of the worldwide economic situation we have. If he fails, we all fail...and he and the rest of the Democrats will pay the price.

But I'm not holding my breath."

I didn't say anybody shouldn't have their own personal "views," that's just part of the process.
I didn't say anybody "had to support" Obama. I didn't say your views "be damned." (I just basically disagree with many that have been posted here.)

If you or anybody else has an alternative suggestion or better yet, a solution, throw it out there. The same goes for Rush or anybody in Congress.

It's called freedom of speech and I'm all for it...whether I agree or not.

The objectifying, the name calling, the allusions to sex with children - all very troubling.

And of course, the diminution of any woman who holds beliefs that are not identical to yours - very control oriented, aren't you?

a) Jindal is in power. That's the whole "Governor" thing.
b) It wasn't one or two comments, it was a whole skit.
c) George Bush was a motherlode of rich comedic material for our nation's comedians. Comparing jokes about him to, oh, anyone else, is like comparing a brook to the Amazon.

So? You are proving reasons that Jon Stewart is working for Obama.

Good grief. Who CARES if the Daily Show is politically biased or not? It wouldn't be worth watching even if I was in complete agreement with Stewart's politics. It is a comedy show that just isn't funny anymore.

The Colbert Report, now, that's funny. Left-wing, yes, but still funny. No matter what your corner of the political spectrum is, there's stuff about it to be made fun of.
