Breakfast this morning here is fried pizza dough! You flatten them out by hand or with a roller like pancakes and then fry them up. Salt or sugar to taste. I prefer them salty.

For those of you with a like for cheese add your favorite and fold in half before frying. Mozzerella works best. Serve alone or with a side of scrambled eggs.

What on earth are you cooking? I'm unable to identify the food. What do pork brains look like?

4 Morningstar strips (one minute ten seconds); two poached eggs (30% power, five minutes); meal cleanup time 12 seconds.

I just had a piece of cake for breakfast.

It was leftover from my work where I commemorated 12 years on the same job with a nice big cake!

No previous employer ever put up with me for so long. Heh.

Love that coffee pot. Or is it a tea pot? In any case that handle is way kewl.

Jason (the commenter) said...

This was my breakfast. Incorporate flowers whenever you can.

Ann Althouse said...

Hey, everyone! Buy the kettle! By using that link, you will be supporting this blog. Also, you will have a very nice kettle that will have the added advantage of reminding you of all the good times hanging out here in the comments.

The breakfast is as Jason describes it, plus potatoes. So it's essentially hash browns with the leftover steak from last night at the Bistro.

MadisonMan said...

This right after (sort of) a post about hot sex on non-flannel sheets.

MadisonMan said...

I had Cheerios with brown sugar and skim milk this morning. To get some fat in my diet, I'm at a coffee shop somewhere having a 2% milk chai, following a 2% Hot Chocolate.

And I have flannel sheets.

Luckily for Prof. A, Lillian Vernon is still in business, still providing decorative burner covers in the 21st Century:

I recommend this kettle, or this version if you don't have a gas stove.

And if you buy my recommended kettles you'll be supporting the Althouse blog (if I got the referrer code correct!) and you'll be able to think of me, Palladian, every time you boil water. And the sound of the whistling kettle will remind you of the irritatingly shrillness of my comments!

From this review we learn that the kettle burns your hands off.

The theme for today's blog posts is "hands": a woman with one hand, burning your hands off, fishermen not holding hands.

Sorry, the Revere whistling teakettle is the only teakettle.

Anonymous said...

Oh, cool. I have been looking for a new tea kettle and I generally dislike the current modernish versions, but I like the one linked.

I also like the red orange green dumpy flat le creuset ones, are they any good, anyone?

Palladian said...

Palladian also recommends the Chemex coffee maker and filters as one of the best ways to brew and enjoy coffees. Palladian prefers the proportions and greater durability of the the Handblown Chemex coffee makers to the machine made ones available on Amazon, but since Palladian wants to help support the Althouse blog, Palladian suggests you buy one from Amazon instead of directly from Chemex.

Anonymous said...

Is it OK if I sit here at the counter, or do you want me in the breakfast nook?

Hey, who messed up the sports section?

Palladian said...

"Sorry, the Revere whistling teakettle is the only teakettle."

Revereware stinks. Poorly conductive thin stainless steel with a copper wash on the bottom that doesn't actually help the heat conductivity at all. But whatever boils your water I suppose.

"I also like the red orange green dumpy flat le creuset ones, are they any good, anyone?"

No. They're thin steel crap made in Thailand, nothing at all like the enameled cast iron cookware that Le Creuset is famous for. Le Creuset has harmed their brand through the time-honored method of over-branding and licensing, lack of focus and the poor quality of their "extended" range of products. Their iron cookware is still very good however.

Jason (the commenter) said...

And maybe if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on kettles that you'll have to polish constantly you'd want this one.

Althouse's kitchen, what we can see of it, looks quite cozy and functional.

We have a 15 yr old black Wolf range and some visitors shrink in horror that it's not stainless, they're not asked back.

I loathe designer cookie cutter kitchens and especially granite, we have Silestone with a huge stainless work table in the center as an island. Our kitchen is very hodge-podge by trendy standards but functions exceptionally well. We'll tart it up one day with kitchen de jour when we sell the house as the Wolf goes with us.

I made steel cut oatmeal with raisins and walnuts, topped with maple sugar and a small knob of unsalted butter. Comfort food.

We have a twenty-five year old Baby Gaggia w/grinder that we've dragged from country to country, re-wiring and nursing along, it makes great espresso and cappuccino.

Filter coffee is just not hot enough and I can taste the filters no matter what the maker promises.

Jason (the commenter) said...

Lem : My theory is that Alhouse son Jac is TiTus.

My reasoning for Titus=Pallidian is this:

Palladian has very strong positive feelings towards Jewish people. Palladian studied classical art and we know he gets very deep in his research. There are several buildings of architectural importance from the Roman world built for or with the help of Emperor Titus (Palladio even drew a plan of the ruins of the Baths of Titus). Emperor Titus sacked Jerusalem. What better way to slander Emperor Titus than to use his name for a character embodying all the qualities Palladian hates?

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

Very good Jason.

But that could also mean Palla Titus and Jac are one and the same.. thereby making Jac's site poor in command since Jac would have to be in so many palaces/places at the same time.

Sorry Jason.. This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it ;)

It may be that today's Made-in-China Revereware is crap. I still use a saucepan -- apparently made in USA -- that my mother received over fifty years ago. My teakettle waa made in Korea.

But despite its rather thin stainless steel/decorative copper bottom construction, it is ideal for boiling water for tea.

A tea kettle should boil enough water to make a pot of tea relatively quickly, without injuring the user. The Revereware kettle is not heavy, even when filled, so it does not put stress on the wrist. The curved handle allows the hand to comfortably hold the kettle as near the center of gravity as possible. Pouring into mugs or pots is also easy.

Most important, the hand cannot be burned by the handle, nor scalded by the steam coming from the spout.

Further, the whistle announces when the water has reached the ideal temperature, a few minutes after being put on a burner.

Importng design features from other products, such as thermal conductivity needed for saute pans, or heat retention needed by Dutch ovens, is unnecessary, and may even be harmful, as in a heavy cast iron teakettle.

The question is why would you cook breakfast unless it was for two.

Quite apart from Althouse's life, personal, shared mysterious or not, some people just like cooking (or find it economical). I lived alone for 7 years back in the day, and I cooked for myself all of the time, even at breakfast. (Overnight guests did get points for doing the honors, however.)

Come to think of it, since I'm the only meat-eater around here, I still cook for myself.

I have that kettle. Have had it for over ten years.

One issue: it has no whistle. Sometimes a user (like my significant other) will forget they turned it on, and will not remember until they hear a crackling sound coming from the kitchen. That signifies that the water has completely boiled away, and the kettle is now cooking. Setting a timer helps prevent that. As does holding onto a thought for more than 2 minutes.

But it is stylish. Although it will develop a black patina over the years (but
maybe only if you "cook" it numerous times, like in my household.)

The thing about Althouse is that it might not be easy to love her..

Todo el amor que te hace falta.

Porque vivo, como ves, como las aves
siempre vagabundo.
Porque junto a mi, en verdad, no existe nadie
que me marque un rumbo,
porque tengo la avidéz de un perro viejo,
sé callar lo nuestro,
porque sé que en el amor nos entendemos;
tienes que seguir pensando sólo en mí.

Porque tienes que guardar la compostura
de una gran señora.
pero sé que necesitas de aventuras
más que de otras cosas.
Ya sabemos qué nos gusta y como somos
y nos complacemos,
y a la vez soy un romántico discreto;
tienes que seguir pensando sólo en mí.

Porque sólo yo,
te puedo regalar,
todo el amor que te hace falta,
te puedo ver mil veces
sin que nadie sepa nada,
porque nadie a mí me exije
explicaciones ni palabras.

Porque sólo yo,
te puedo procurar,
todo el amor que te hace falta;
yo sé perfectamente
lo que quieres si me llamas;
que pena si una cosa así tan bella
terminara..

Because you have to keep composure
of a great lady.
but I know you need adventure
besides other things.
We know what we like and we do as we please,
and at the same time I am a discreet romantic;
you have to keep yout mind on me.

Because only I, I can give you,
all the love you need,
I can see you a thousand times w/o
no one knowing anything,
because no one will call on me
for explanations nor permisions.

Because only I, I can secure,

I know perfectly
what you want if you call me;
waht a pity if such a beautiful thing so should end..

Aw, Lem. It was sweet of you to write me a poem. Thanks. Now, don't drink too much. Jesus loves you and so do I. Hugs!

Blogging cockroach?

Sure I hung around here in the wings for some time before I commented. But is there any way I can be brought up to speed about Maxine? She was before my time, yet apparently "historical" for you at least.

To Ann...I TOO wake up at 5am, or thereabouts. I do the very natural pee thing and then go back to sleep, and if I'm lucky, I dream yet again.

If rumors can be trusted here, (OK big "if"), but it seemed to me at least, that your fanboys were rooting for your routing.

Shamefully, I fell into fanboy "groupthink".

Can you ever forgive me?

Spoken like the mother of a very young child.. a very lucky young child.

thanks Freeman, a little pat in back like that and I'm as good as new.

So, blogging cockroach?

Tell me more about Maxine.

Penny, you could be whomever, including yourself, and I take no stance. Regardless--and here's the the sum total point of this comment--if you really want to know, you could start here.

Why rely on others?

(Except to fill in blanks;--but that's the cart, after you've got the horse.)

Me, I'm put in mind of the following song (sorry, Jan & Dean version not available, much less my second choice, or at least not quickly enough): This one.

Which doesn't put ME in mind of Maxine as first choice for sock puppet, if indeed Penny is.

Whether Penny is or Penny is not, unfolding is inevitable, as it is for each and every Althouse commenter (character, sock puppet, just-himself-or-herself or whatever).

That's an Althousupational hazard. Goes (comes?) with the territory.

IMHO, anyway, FWIW & so it goes, LOL (to be clear).

; )

"Palladian, how much would it cost to pay you to come here and organize my kitchen?"

Oh, I doubt you'd want me to do that. My 'organization' is very personal and is generally 'organized chaos', undecipherable and unknowable to anyone but me :)

reader_iam said...

Doesn't get more perfect than that, Palladian, after all--and XXOO, darn it!

(That last comment of mine was not sarcastic.

For that matter, neither were the previous two.)

Thanks for the google links about Maxine, but frankly, I prefer the short form on this topic.

Anyone I can trust here to give me that?

Hey, thanks for the advice on the kettles, palladian and all.

Arty, quirky, quality and well-made, is that too much to ask for? In kettles and otherwise?

That's a really cool tea kettle! Breakfast looks good too. This morning I didn't actually have breakfast. :( I woke up late and had to run.
