Oh, the things people search for.

Referring search words ranked by visits -- as captured a moment ago:

Yes, I clicked on "vaginas." My blog is hit #3 in an AOL search for that term. I also found this there, from AdFreak:

Apparently, the ad seemed like a good idea because "The Vagina Monologues" was in town.

This post is purely for amusement purposes and not a sleazy effort to attract more traffic from the search term "vaginas."

UPDATE: Time Magazine reports on the Googling for "hot" pics of Sarah Palin.

Anatomical terminology takes another body blow, though you could argue that a bagel ad is a step in the right direction, abstractly considered.

What sort of compensation is there for having a popular blog?

Chet said...

500 comments on one post. Yet it was the same 5 people, who made a total of 100 comments each. Actually it was only one person---a fast typist, who managed to make all 500 comments.

A mandatory Paypal donation of $20 for every comment made, would have yielded you $ 10,000.00 on that post alone.

What is the cost of maintaining this blog?

Ann Althouse said...

The cost of maintaining the blog is $0, unless you count buying cameras and lenses... and food and housing for the author.

That will attract lots of commenters, and many will make donations if you do a post on that.

That obviously explains the purpose of including the words "amusement", "sleazy", "attract", and "Freak".

I'll ride the vagina bandwagon with you, Ann.

We're safe and well in North Texas, waiting for the gubmint to tell us we can go home. No power or internet connectivity yet in our neighborhood, and we both need those two things for work, so we probably won't head home until Friday morning. It's a 9-10 hour drive in normal conditions, so we hope to be a day behind the other 1.9 million people on the road.

Evacuating is stressful and expensive. We'll be considering buying a generator and one single-room window AC unit for future storms. We'd still have hightailed it for this one, given that it was a 5 in the Gulf and had it been only 50 miles more to the East, this would have turned out badly. But smaller storms, I'd prefer to sit tight.

My brother and his wife live on the West Bank, where the worst flooding was predicted. It looks like they came out okay. They weathered the storm with another brother and sister-in-law in Lafayette. Lots of wind and water damage there, but they're safe.

We had a day of anxiety-filled phone calls to Thibodaux, just miles from the predicted and actual landfall. My father-in-law and his partner did decide to evacuate and we were relieved, but his sister and brother, also elderly, were planning to stay. Finally, Sunday afternoon, they capitulated and headed north. Storm surges of 20 feet were possible in their area, so you can imagine our fear.

Things have gone well for us so far except for one incident: a large, aggressive dog attacked Pee Wee, my dachshund, during an exercise outing, and ripped a big hole in his neck. Because his neck was protected by a thick leash and a collar, his artery was not nicked so he's okay. When we took him to the emergency vet for treatment, there were five other dog attack injuries there, and two of them were put down before we left. There are lots of people and animals in close quarters during this kind of event, so it's not suprising turf battles will occur, and aggressive dogs will be even more so. But damn, I wanted to kill that dog. It belongs to our friend, and let's just say things are a little tense between us right now. Oh well. I am grateful to be focused on such a minor thing, and planning to return home in the near future.

Thanks for all the concerns and kinds works, Althouse readers.

ZPS, have you ever read my blog?

Then you know I constantly post about "real perspective".

In a recent blogpost called "Sarah Palin does that to People, I recounted this story:

A month ago, I encountered a lady at my local South Florida coffeeshop, whose family were looking for construction jobs in our area. Originally from Gainesville, she had one of those excessively lilting Southern accents which either enchant you or distract you (the former, for me).

I have this trick with people. I like to flesh out their opinions by gently directing the conversation. It wasn't long before we got to the topic of politics.

"I was raised to believe white people and black people shouldn't date", she proclaims.

"Oh? Like Barack Obama's parents?"

"Barack Obama? No, I mean my daughter."

(Laugh) "I see. But you are not comfortable with him?"

"Oh no, ma'am, as long as he fixes the economy, I don't care. We're suffering real bad up there."

Before I have a chance to prod, she drops this bombshell (well, another one).

"I just don't want a woman to be President. I don't want a woman making decisions with the menopause."

See, I have to do this because I come from one of the most elitist backgrounds you can imagine. I likened myself once to my boyfriend as being Kerry. Swiss boarding school, elite University, distinguished lineage.

I could NEVER run for President, even if I had been born here.

People like me are dead meat in Presidential politics.

But all my life, I have searched out people from backgrounds and listened to what they say. And I trust the man on the street infinitessimally more than I do the man in the country club.

So thanks, ZPS, but if you don't mind, I'll take this and STILL continue to talk to average people, who totally unbeknownst to them, are my heroes.

Cheers,
Victoria

Also glad here that you're alright.

My daughter had a cat, barely a year old, that was eaten by my brother's terrier while he and his family were visiting and we all went to Disneyland. Scottie had slipped out of his leash and rammed through the screen door to get to the cat.

Needless to say, the reunion ended quickly. That was 12 years ago, but it can still make my daughter cry to think about it.

Good thing they held on to the dog that day before they left my home. Kept me from seeing how far a terrier could fly after being popped up and hit by a baseball bat.

Beth if I may, I suggest that before you buy a generator you should consider a standby generator. I'm sure where you are even the electric company will sell and install one for you. Home Depot sells them as well with an installation package. Best if you have natural gas service, don't need to fear about running out of propane. Also just as important, indeed more so, is getting your roof reinforced to handle a higher windstorm. Have a structural engineer design the extra reinforcing. With the materials and labor cost me about $2400.00 in total. Not cheap but considering my roof now exceeds the highest windstorm code in the nation and should be able to withstand a 146mph windstorm well worth the money. An insurance settlement check is good. Having an intact home, priceless.

As long as your home is not in a flood zone and if the shutters are up to code and the roof reinforced the house should withstand just about anything short of a tornado. Having a natural gas generator means that you should be able to stay put at home and ride out the storms in comfort.

Katrina and Wilma both had they eye wall literally pass over my home and adding the other 2004 storms that affected my area I suffered no damage to the home and the generator ran a total of 30 days. 9 of them nonstop.
------------------------------------

Now if the left would only get their collective heads out of their rectums they just might realize that bashing the Palin woman's vagina's is the ticket to a republican victory. Indeed the more they continue the more likely Palin will campaign everywhere there is an endangered republican and endangered democrat. That won't guarantee a republican congress but it may make the democrat margin thin enough that conservative democrats out of fear will blow off Pelosi and Reid. McCain did what I believed he wasn't capable of doing. He changed the game. He is now the candidate of change. Obama and Biden are now the same old tired socialist democratic McSame. The only chance Obama has now is if the republicans blow it which is always a possibility. Fortunately the Move On.org left is too crazy to notice and will pave the way to McCain's inauguration. Just run a few spots showing radicals smashing windows, trashing cars and just being their usual communist selves with the caption stating "they aren't voting republican. who are you voting for?" Priceless.

A really interesting election to watch is the Mass ballot initiative to repeal the state income tax. The proponents are explicitly stating their aim is to not only lower the tax burden but to force a shrinkage in the size of state government. If that proposition passes, the effect could be seismic.

The Alaskan Independence Party must not be that radical since the party's gubernatorial candidate won the 1990 election.

It also reminds me of the attitudes of many Texans, including my wife's sister-in-law, a native San Antonian.

Basically, their position is if the federal government ever violates the original compact that made Alaska and Texas states, then the states have a right to withdraw from the union.

In short, they view statehood as a contract, if one side violates the terms of the contract, then the other side is no longer bound by the contract.

Also, many Alaskans are still pissed off at Jimmy Carter and Congress for setting aside significant chunks of Alaska as protected wildlife areas and national parks in 1980.

Best I can tell, no one affiliated with AIP has bombed the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, police stations, or other government buildings, so we probably don't need to fear AIP's members.

Alaska is a place where everyone...owns no less than 3 shotguns.

What's wrong with that?

A 410 is a good squirrel and rabbit gun, a 20 gauge shotgun is good for home defense, and a 12 gauge shotgun with a rifled barrel is an excellent firearm for whitetail deer hunting, which is what I use during deer season here in Indiana.

Not a gun fanatic, but I believe that shot comes out at the same velocity from a 20 or 12 guage shotgun standard shell. The only difference is the weight and number of pellets for the shot size selected.

Even .410 loaded with birdshot will kill a buffed up thug at a range of 10 feet with a single shot, though.

For inside home defense, if you are concerned with penetration and spread, I'd stay away from 00 and go with #4 or higher bird loads.
Law enforcement "heroes" use 00 because they may have to use shotguns outdoors at longer ranges for a target, or use the pellets for fire suppression because they go farther than birdshot.

But for home defense, IMHO, a good handgun is better if you know how to shoot it well. Houses are all corners and enfilades...and you can shoot a lot easier with a handgun w/o exposing much of you to the bad guy(s) fire. You also can get off shots faster, and you can elect to keep one hand free if you want.
