So I didn't buy the headphones (yet)...

But I did buy this thing (at the MoMa store). I'm giving it a 4-star rating. It may seem absurd to pay $38 for an apple slicer, even one that has a beautiful design perfectly merging form and function. But if you're like me and you want to eat apples but can't stand to just bite into them whole and are sick of chopping through them with one of these, you might love this. It slices the apple cleanly and easily into a spiral. As it goes around, it's embedded in the apple, and it seals the uneaten part so it doesn't turn brown or dry out. You can start with a nice, big apple and just eat however much you want. No conflict between waste and overeating or fear of buying overly large apples.

A 2 night stay in SF at the Ritz cost you about a grand. Later we are treated to a story about a 33 cent refund at starbucks. Now we get the 38 dollar apple slicer that saves money.

Please don't start collecting cats.

Slicer is nice. Have a similar German one that has a slidable blade so you can thin-slice raw potato strips, corn off the cob as well as fruit-slice.

If you have transpo and free time, try a trip to one of the local orchards to get your photography fix and a few bags of cheap apples and squash satisfied.

Lots of Catskill ones, CT, and Northernmost Jersey. Open till early December. Cider mills, too.

Bag of fresh golden delicious, Mutsus, Ida Reds, Macoun that taste nothing like store bought and cost 80% less? Can't go wrong. Picking as wild turkeys saunter by? A family experience.
Summertime tomato, raspberry, peach (white and cling) picking are great too. Or no picking - just swoop into the outlet store.

My transpo consists of taxis, car service, and readers who give me a lift in their Porsche 911 Turbos.

Wow, the life of a lawprof is fraught with many hidden dangers. :-)

Maybe you can connect it to the "Let's take a closer look at those breasts" madness.

Was that a product tie-in to this painting?

So you don't want to buy into the Big Apple? Don't blame you.

There should be a farmers market somewhere in your neighborhood, or a purveyor of produce who sells regional apples. I miss York and winesap apples.

Sounds like a good subject for you next podcast.

Just take a subway to Union Square - they have lots of orchards who have stalls there with great apples.

You can get a wonderful apple slicer that does the sprial cut (actually, it's a helix, but let's not be obnoxious, shall we?) and has a handle and an optional peeler, at Target or WalMart for about 14 bucks.
It's not as cool as the MOMA one, though.

tony, have you told the spiral-sliced ham people that they're really helically sliced? I'd email Honey-Baked ASAP if you haven't already.

Also let the Skil Corporation know that their circular saws are necessarily cylindrical saws.

Quiet beauty of the Ritz.

Tactile feedback from a ceramic mug.

Engineering excellence of a 911 Turbo.

Elegant design of an apple peeler.

No wonder Greenwald offends you so.

Thanks! Not sure why I don't have any gadgets like this, since I always cut up and core apples before I eat them - and I eat them every day in the fall. My dogs love apples too and giving them a whole one for a treat makes too much of a mess. I'm here in apple country and even the $8.99 slicer you replaced seems like an improvement over what I use (a knife). If you can find Honey Crisp - try them, they are awesome. I'm headed to the orchard tomorrow to stock up again.

I was using a knife myself, but I'm normally too lazy to do it or I'm not interested in eating a whole big apple.

You knew when you saw it that the device is elegant -- which largely explains where it was offered for sale to you -- and you've also confirmed that it works as represented and intended.

You'll feel a moment of satisfaction many times for those things when you use it.

I'd say its utils, broadly defined, justify its price for you, Prof. A, so you certainly need not be defensive about the price you paid. Certainly we've all paid more than that for things whose utils turned out to have a disappointing ratio to their prices.

And you're probably right about the headphones. You'll get synergistic utils if you wait for the ones made for your iPhone, since you like it so much too.
