What does it take to get commenters to snark at the ABA Journal blog?

They pose this question: "If you could rename your law school, what name would you choose?" A hundred wisecracks should follow. But no. A day later, there are only 5 comments, and two of them earnestly address the problem of confusion between New York Law School and NYU. Two are concerned with excessive clutter in the names:
I would get rid of the Hyphen and change Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis to Indianapolis School of Law.

I’d change Wake Forest University School of Law to Wake Forest Law School.
Now, I agree on that last point. Every law school that's calling itself "School of Law" (or, worse, "College of Law") ought to make it just Law School. But, jeez, where are all the hilarious insults? Are you just afraid to expose your bad attitude to the ABA? Fine. Put it here.

I'm not a lawyer, but if I were I'd demand that my alma mater change its name to You, a Law School!

As a UW grad--Babcock Hall Ice Cream Store Law School.

The law school at the University of Florida should simply use an acronym FU Law.

Doesn't snark require some bit of a sense of humor?

This is because no one reads the ABA Journal blog.

I thought University of Florida Law School would be U FLAW.

ATL did a post on the same subject matter regarding the law school at UC Berkeley. Supposedly they are going to follow it up with a poll based on the best entries in the comments.

I would like Wisconsin to change its name to [Donor] Law School, after somebody gives us maybe $500 million.

I have no recollection of the official name of the law school at Wayne Stat (Detroit) but I'd be happy to see it named The Mad Anthony Wayne Law School.

I would go with Stately Wayne Law School for that one.

Back in my (non-law) school days, I always said the law school at my old second-tier state U. should be the "Clarence Darrow School of Public Defense." The law students I knew didn't care for that.

I don't know about a law school name, but I know the best school cheer in the history of the world.
It was when Brooklyn's own Fly Williams was playing for Austin Peay University:
"Fly is Open,
Lets Go Peay"

My Dad's Catholic high school teachers stopped this racy cheer in 1949:

Rah Rah Ree
Kick 'em in the knee.
Rah Rah Rass
Kick 'em in the other knee.

Sometimes I wish I lived in the time when that was considered mildly scandalous.

If I work hard to raise awareness about giving $500 million to legal education at Wisconsin, maybe even making a Youtube movie and writing a pamphlet about how the money is needed and how it should be spent, could you name it the PaddyO School of Law? I won't donate anything myself mind you, but I'll make the cause my cause.

I'd also appreciate other awards you might nominate me for as I pursue the noble effort of helping Wisconsin provide the best legal education possible.

The one time I saw comments on the ABA wall was when they actually reported that the legal market really isn't very good. Actually, they didn't actually report that, but they reported that the Wall Street Journal reported that.

And as a recent law graduate from Wisconsin, I can assure everyone that it's true, the legal market just isn't very good (at least in Wisconsin). But the comments went either, "law schools lied to me and that why I don't have job, and it's not fair" or "Stop being whiny, and walk uphill to work, both ways like I did. You lousy wippersnappers..." with nothing inbetween.

It's actually quite interesting to read. In a snarky way. http://www.abajournal.com/weekly/law_school_secret_bad_job_market

I like the idea "[Donor] Law School" as is.

Ernst Blofeld said...

The problem with [Donor] Law School is that it's permanent, sorta. You don't get a continuing income stream.

Law schools should take a stadium naming approach. The schools charge a sum for a two year right to name the school [major law firm] School of Law. Even non-legal corporations could get into it. Imagine how much Harvard could charge to be named as the Coca Cola Zero Law School.

Ann Althouse said...

You just need enough to make an endowment. Then you have permanent income. It has to be a large amount to work.

B said...

Obviously the best choice for Ann's school would be for this gentleman to endow his entire fortune as soon as possible:

University of Wisconsin Madison Rush Limbaugh School of Law

Speaking of ain't gonna happen. Whoever wrote this was ignorant of two things: There is a University of Indianapolis, which is NOT the same school as IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, pron. ooey-pooey), where the law school is. The author also seems to be unaware of the long-standing, ongoing, heated battle by IUPUI (actually Indianapolis) legislators and trustees to move IU's flagship campus from Bloomington to Indianapolis.

There's two good reasons this ain't gonna happen. Just like moving the flagship campus ain't gonna happen, unless IUPUI grows a great deal. It's pretty small potatoes compared to the Bloomington campus.

Is there a Shark University somewhere that has a law school?

Why did the lawyer volunteer for the local EMT service?

So he could ride in the ambulance and not chase it.
