Moxvox!

I'm moxvoxing tonight. Join us!

ADDED: Simulblogging being on the show. Currently, I'm on hold, but now I'm going on.

AND: I phased out during that long Ron Paul call.

AND: I got cut off. Trying to go back on!

NEXT DAY: Sorry for the dull simulblogging!

IN THE COMMENTS: Our regular commenter Beth objects to the line in the banner at Moxie's blog. ("An antidote to the mental illness known as 'liberalism.'") I defend Moxie on the ground that the line is meant to be humorous, and there's a lot of discussion about whether it's humorous, and Moxie comes by say that it is meant to be humorous and to coax Beth to a friendlier stance. (Is "stance" an unusable word this week?) Then Steve H. Graham drops in and says something impolite which is meant to piss off a feminist. Let's listen in to this after-midnight banter:
Steve H. Graham said...

Beth, honey, I think I know what you need. Some good hard lovin' from a meat-eating Republican he-man such as me. That is usually the problem when ladies act hysterical and/or hormonal.

Send a photo and I will decide if I can help you out.

Meat-eating Steve,

I like my steak medium rare. But I bat for another team, so the rest of your generous offer must go unclaimed.

Beth, do not be so sure you are that type of girl. We thought my sister was that way, but it turned out she was merely outdoorsy.

My offer stands. And I do not mean anything crude by that.

Steve, you may not know everything your sister gets up to outdoors.

So, what's this MoxVox thing all about anyway?

Hmmm... I see it's at Moxie.nu, whose banner features a pair of high-heeled leather boots and the tagline

"an antidote to the mental illness commonly known as 'liberalism'"

Sounds perfect for you!

Well, listen and find out. I think we're talking about sex!

XWL said...

That should be interesting if you two do discuss sex. Moxie recently posted about being celibate, despite living in LA, and being in her mid 30s, and being smoking hot.

Prof. Althouse hasn't ever discussed ongoing relationships (or their absence if that's the case), other than to say she won't be discussing them.

I respect both positions by both women (though I would likely find Moxie's stance rather maddening should I find myself involved with her).

I'll be listening, even if they don't talk about sex, afterall.

(and besides both being blonde, female and attractive, the other attribute they share is that they are both fantastic photographers)

Beth said...

Why would I join you at a site that says I'm mentally ill? That sucks, Ann. The next time you're going on about how the liberal blogs are so mean to you, I won't be listening.

Beth,

Given your prior criticisms of Bush it is clear that you are suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome and thus you are deranged.

Conversely, when someone from the "right"(e.g. Simon) side is critical of Bush, it is evidence of their capacity to reason and see the truth.

regards.

Beth:

How about giving Ann the benefit of the doubt, reviewing her encounter on moxie, and learning if she condemns the insulting reference to liberalism.

Ann Althouse said...

Hey, did anyone actually listen. Moxie talked about being celibate for 3 years.

Simon said...

Ann - re Fred, while you were on air his campaign circulated an announcement that he will be joining the race on September 6. He has a page on his site talking about his views on federalism (I commented here, observing that I'm pleased by it but Guiliani has a better incentive structure to actually implement federalist policies). And of course, once he gets in, I would presume he'll have things to say on broader topics.

Gee, that Paulista really was the cream of the bunch, wasn't he!

Beth said...

Beth, with all due respect, Moxie invited Ann on. When was the last time Matthew Yglesias invited Ann onto his internet radio program? I mean, you can't credibly blame her for accepting this invitation unless you're assuming that she's turning down invitations from liberal equivalents, right? And she went to some lengths to point out her liberal positions. If liberals don't want to assocaite with her on their radio shows and conservatives do, you want her to say "no, I'm not going to have a dialogue with someone I disagree with"?

I watched and it was pretty cool. No big flubs for live radio.

I was also surprised to see that there was a live video feed as well.

Is this a tryout? I can see it now: Live from New York, 'Althouse Live Radio!'

Beth:

I am bending over backwards to give Ann the benefit of the doubt. However, I am uncomfortable with any show that is not comedic, coming from any political persuasion, refering to a political philosophy as a mental disorder. It is demeaning to the political perspective and to individuals with mental disorders.

Ann Althouse said...

Why are you obsessing about her blog banner? It's humorous. You might as well fuss over whether I'm actually formidable and divine.

Ann:

I was about to load the show but couldn't. I did not want to reinforce something that so saliently insulted a set of political beliefs and a group of suffering people (earlier you posted about Kiera Knightly). Pesonally, I found the banner hurtful.

But here goes......I have a very rich vein of bipolar illness and depression that runs through one side of my family. I have lost a sibling and three first cousins of my generation to suicide all when they were young adults. My mother was institutionalized when I was thirteen and spent the rest of her life in various psychiatric facilities. All of these individuals were brilliant, kind, and lived in torment.

I understand that some folks may find the banner humorous and I would not seek to stop them from visiting the site or laughing at the banner. Not me, however.

Eric Muller said...

What's disturbing about the banner is that it's a paraphrase of the title of Michael Savage's book.

Beth said...

Simon, with all due respect--sincerely--the next time you go into your "liberals are ruder than conservatives" I'll be blowing you a raspberry. You live in a glass house, my friend.

Ann, it's not humorous. It's just childishly insulting. And your comparison of her banner to yours fails the test of parallelism. The comments on your banner refer to yourself, and don't attack other people. And quoting Michael Savage for a banner? That's humor? Not so much.

I try to maintain fairly polite relationships with the conservatives who comment here, at least those who speak to me with some degree of politeness. I ignore the fuckwits for the most part. But I have to wonder why I should continue to bother with that pretense when underneath the surface here, there's a core of contempt for liberals that comes through even from the so-called moderate mistress of this blog.

SuperDave said...

Sorry that some of the previous commenters missed live radio broadcast. Coming to this blog for a couple of years, I first heard of VLOGS and Podcasts here and now have had the pleasure to have a new medium to explore.

I had never heard of Moxie, but she appeared to be a thoughtful and polite young woman. The young fellows on the show were well behaved and did not appear to even blink when they found out that Althouse has liberal social views.

You might want to look beyond the heading and give it another chance.

Beth said...

Sorry, Dave. If the polite young woman wants to politely invite me in, I'm all for it. But otherwise, her heading tells me she's a snippy little nitwit, so no, I don't plan to give her my attention.

Meade said...

Beth protested: "Why would I join you at a site that says I'm mentally ill?" And then Beth rightly pointed out: "The comments on your banner refer to yourself, and don't attack other people."

That is true - Althouse's banner doesn't attack other people. But, if one reads carefully, the banner at Moxie doesn't attack other people either. It attacks a spoiled ideology, "liberalism."

It would be no different than someone attacking my style of humor as being "sick." It's close to but still not a personal attack. The choice whether or not to take the criticism personally and allow myself to be offended and then call the other party names like "snippy little nitwit," or not, would be a reflection of MY childishness... or not.

Unknown said...

Ann, thanks so much for calling in. It was indeed "divine" having you on the show! And I'm happy many of your readers tuned in.

Beth, you are welcome to call, my show runs every Thursday. And Ann is correct, my banner is meant to be humorous.

For the record, I wasn't aware of Michael Savage's book years ago when I wrote that tagline. Not a big fan of his.

Perhaps I'll write a new one. But I suspect you won't like the new one either. I simply can't please everybody.

Indeed, Ruth Anne. And so sincerely, too.

Not all attempts at humor succeed, but I'm certain my perception isn't all that important to mox. I don't think I'm missing anything, including a good laugh.

Mox,

I wouldn't want you to try to please everyone--what kind of blog would that be? Thanks for the invite, though. Michael Savage stole your line? If you call his show to complain, I will tune in to listen. That really could be humorous.

Beth said...

Ruth Anne, it's a snippy little twit of a line, yes. It's the front door to the blog, so it says to me "stay out." If that's her intention, then it's a successful strategy.

Beth, To the best of my knowledge, I have had that tagline since late in 2004. Savage's book was released in April of 2005.

I don't think the idea was stolen or borrowed by anyone. If google went back a hundred years, you could probably say we ripped it off from someone else who is long dead.

That said, again, please feel free to call in.

My co-host Tony is rather liberal, so you will be in good company. You can ask me about my tagline. Seriously. Genuinely.

Mox, I'll give your blog a read. Your invitation was kindly offered, if I'm not mistaken. I appreciate that. The tagline, however, strikes me as exactly the approach I'm trying to distance myself from online. That Ann regularly gets ina huff and demands apologies from liberal bloggers who make nasty but arguably humorous remarks about her but ignores the same kind of "humor" on the right side of the fence is simply a disappointment to me. Take that, if you will, as an explanation for my reaction to her inviting us to join her at a site that laughingly proclaims me to be mentally ill.

MadisonMan said...

You can't tell someone that something is humorous. I find the statement humorous in an eye-rolling oh brother this is humor on the internet type of way. That is: not very.

Unknown said...

Madisonman, I sure hope you didn't laugh at any segment of The Chris Rock Show, or Jay Leno or some shit that ended up on on your TIVO. That would be unfortunate, just so you know.

MadisonMan said...

mox, having TIVO would require watching TV, which I don't do.

When I've seen him, I've found Chris Rock a little too angry to be funny. I don't watch Leno either -- it seems like each show is just too much like any other. Repetition kills humor.

Beth said...

Steve meant to piss me off? Wow, am I dense. I thought he was playing straight man for me, you know, in the humorous sense.

Simon said...

LMAO at Palladian's 1:29 AM comment. I have to asume Steve's comments are intended to be a parody of the strawman knuckle-dragging Republican often created by the nutsroots.

Being very familiar with Hog On Ice, I think you could take this to the bank, Simon.

As I've mentioned, my husband is a vegetarian (for philosophical reasons), and, truth be told, he doesn't have much of a sense of humor about it. And yet Steve H.'s book "Eat What You Want and Die Like a Man" had him rolling, in places. There's just something about the guy's schtick. It's not for everyone, but it's not mean-spirited, I don't think. I suspect that were I to meet him in real life, I'd be tempted to argue with him, a lot, about an array of things--but between spasms of laughter.

(I will say that while I'm a fan of his written humor, I'm not into his vlogging/podcasting stuff. IMO, the latter aren't his forte.)
