The Top 100 Cover Songs.

I love Retrocrush, and I'm just finishing the 99th podcast, which is about the top 25 of the Top 100 Cover Songs. If you haven't heard Robert Berry's podcasting, you really need to listen. He's got a hilarious voice and delivery style: adorably nerdy. He's pretty knowledgeable and articulate too. And I like a lot of his choices, though all 100 could easily be different songs. Here's the whole top 100 (with lots of YouTube clips). Don't miss #57: Crispin Glover's "Ben."

Great list, I saw little that I disagreed with and a lot of pleasant surprises. I was especially glad to see my favorite Beatles cover on the list: Joe Cocker, With A Little Help From My Friends.
The worst cover list should be amusing and I can think of two versions of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds that should make the list: William Shatner's and Elton John's.

I liked #27 for the original artist credit.

Adorably nerdy is right. That description inspired me to listen and I'm hooked. Thanks.

No complaints with Sid Vicious and I was pleased to see that my personal favorite, Devo's "Satisfaction" ranked so highly.

A couple others the list missed:
"Oops I did it again," Richard Thompson (his CD "1000 Years of Popular Music" is nothing but brilliant covers)

"Strawberry Fields, Forever," Los Fabulosos Cadillacs

"Fred G. Zydeco," a zydeco version of the "Sanford and Son" theme by Zydeco Force.

"911 is a Joke," Duran Duran

"These boots are made for walking," Petty Booka

"Rainbow Connection" and "Over the rainbow," Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

"Black Dog," Dread Zeppelin

"Sweet Jane (With Affection)", Two Nice Girls

and for a Christmas themed cover, nothing is better than Duke Ellington's rearrangement of The Nutcracker.

Ann, your new pick is putrid and you are an idiot for posting it and because you don't get that Mormons aren't Christians -- do you not know that Mormons believe that Jesus stopped off in Utah on his way to Heaven? Have you never heard about that little twist? On top of the fact that Mormons believe Christ to only be a prophet, not the son of God, not the Saviour.

Yet you get your panties in a knot over "Christianists."

You have never been to a Mormon church -- never been trained in Latter Day Saint theology. Slimeball.

Gosh that was easy -- calling names and weaving in seriousness.

Teach away *all-knowing* prof!

"Sweet Jane (With Affection)"

bill -- savoie? Don't wanna out you, but if you are the the same bill I know who also knows Robert and knew Sterling Morrison before he died -- wow dude, it's been a long time.

If you aren't the same bill who was friends with Sterling, sorry -- for you.

(Ann -- did you get that? I drank many a beer with Sterling Morrison. You know who he was, no? FYI he'd taken your ass and kick it, were he alive today.)

I'm torn, I think that the alien antfarm version of smooth criminal is awesome, and that the 99 remake of blue monday is awesome.

I say smooth criminal is the best cover, at least in terms of contemporary music.

No, he's the Bill who knew Sterling Morrison after he died, when he was less apt to beat up old women.

Different bill. Though I do appreciate a good old woman beating, on occasion. If done with sincerity. Nothing worse than making grandma cry when your heart isn't in it.

The Ramones did the best cover songs. Stripped them all down into Ramones songs...which usually made them better!
