Fall.

Bleak:

Fall

But that was yesterday.

Fall

Today... I need to get out.

Ann,

It could be worse - we got about six inches of snow two days ago, and it is starting to stick to the ground. I don't expect to have everything snow free until maybe April, esp. with mild el Nino effects, which supposedly should give us extra early snow (but then a drier Jan.) It is 22.5 degrees, and should get up into the mid-40s today. But it is cloud free, and should be quite pleasant by noon outside.

So, while you are still dealing with fall, we already have winter here in the CO mountains. Leaves are already gone, and snow is on the ground, etc. It is quite pleasant as winter goes, but still, you have to start dealing with all those winter things, like shoveling snow, clearing off you car, topping off the windshield wiper fluid at least once a week (even in an Audi), wearing waterproof shoes, etc.

Ann, you've probably answered the question a thousand times, but I haven't been on lately. DO tell what type camera you are using...

You can always click on the picture and get to a page that includes info on which camera I'm using. This is just a very small Nikon.

Yes, it's a great time to get out and about! We've had beautiful October weather in California. Unfortunately, the dry and windy autumn heat brings out the arsonists. It's very hard to understand what brings people to torch the mountain countryside. The brush is dry like kindling. The stories of the four firefighters overwhelmed by a wall of fire are heartrending.

Hmmm...says its a Sony.

Whoops, yeah, it's a Sony. This is my second Sony. I loved the first one and wanted a slimmer version. My big camera is a Nikon and I bought a little Nikon that looks a lot like the new Sony for my son.

"I need....."---Althouse

I need. I need. I need.

Shameless self-absorption.

Never start a sentence with ...I need---

Better:

"Wouldn't it be nice to...."

"Perhaps what is best for today is..."

"It might very well do some good to...."

See the difference?

Peace, Maxine

Well, what's this thing where people ordering food at a counter start with "I need..."?

"I need a poppy seed bagel with cream cheese."

That's just a patent lie in the form of a gratuitous -- almost lascivious -- revelation. She should say "I want a poppy seed bagel with cream cheese." Or "I demand a poppy seed bagel with cream cheese. Forthwith!"

Maxine Weiss said...

No no no.

If you are ordering from a counter you say:

"Do you have...

or

"Will you get for me...

It's not "I" it's "You". Would- YOU-please get me......

Getting-along skills.

Making a good-impression.

Peace, Maxine

Speaking of self-absorption, you were imitated by Carl Kassel on the NPR show "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!" today, Ann! He used the same voice he uses for Britney Spears, Hillary Clinton and, well, pretty much all females. It's at 4:55 into segment one, a brief bit about the New Jersey same-sex partners decision

Ann Althouse said...

Yeah, I heard that. He only used the first part of my quote... Then everyone just tried to be funny by repeating the idea that New Jersey is boring. I used to live in New Jersey, so that irks me a little. I'd like to see a little more humor about all this focus on getting married. It's so damned serious. I'm nostalgic for the days when people mocked marriage. They were all: New Jersey is boring. What about: marriage is boring. Oh! If only marriage could get boring again. People are expecting way too much from it.

Autumn in Wisconsin is so gorgeous. I grew up in Dodgeville, 40 miles west of Madison, and I can't tell you how much I miss that area at this time of year.

"But that was yesterday."

I know you don't intend to do it, but I wish you wouldn't get me humming these things ....

"We walked together hand in hand
'Cross miles and miles of golden sand.
For me you were the one,
But that was yesterday,
And yesterday's gone."

(Chad and Jeremy, 1964)
