"Cuter than Glenn Reynolds, less cute than Markos Moulitsas."

Alex Pareene (of Wonkette) answers the question: "Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful?"

Read the whole FishbowlDC interview. Photo of Pareene at the link, so you can decide for yourself what's the true order of cuteness for Glenn, Kos, and Alex. I'll just say that Alex's photo looks like it belongs on the back cover of "Bringing It All Back Home." That's completely distracting me.

Damning with faint praise or something like that.

BTW when did grooming and showering go out of style?

Kos is cutest, hands down.

What's even more distracting is the repugnant racist and sexist comment he made about a certain blogger.

No Anne, Bringing it all Back Home had a dreamy female model and Dylan even at his most whacked out didn't look like that dork. That picture makes you NOT want to start a blog or any way be associated with one. UGH!!!

I don't know. The picture reminds me of Pat.

Carefull, now. Remember, discussing someone's physical attractiveness is off-limits, since it obviously ("obviously"!) denigrates the person as an intellectual being. Or does that theory only hold when someone comments on the attractiveness of females? Is it okay to talk about whether Glenn has better taste in ties than Kos, yet beyond the pale to comment on Ann's new vlog?

Ah, the mysteries of hysterical reactionary feminism. I actually just started reading a blook by Phyllis Chesler at the moment that bewails in part how much feminism has been diverted from its real goals, and you couldn't ask for a better example.

Looked at the photo- is Alex a man or a woman?

Where did this meme come from that Kos is cute?

The aesthetic sensibilities of most other women are entirely foreign to me.

Kos is cute? He looks like a rounder Mr. Bean.

Mr. Pea perhaps?

And BTW, next time someone asks Alex if it's cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful?, it should answer Dirty.

Looks like a big poof.

I don't know many men who want to be "cute," which implies childish or feminine looks. In fact, do grown women like be referred to as "cute"? In law school, a good friend of mine (a woman) was horrified when someone commented that she looked "cute," replying "children and puppies are cute."

Icepick nailed it: "It's Pat!"

wurly,

Women hate being referred to as cute. It is one step above saying the "look great for their age" or "are almost as pretty as their sister". There is the great speech by Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham where she says that the last thing she wants to be is cute because "baby ducks are cute" and women should be exciting and ravishing. I think it is an example of women not understanding men very well. As a man I think cute is sexy. To me pretty is something you say about a woman who has a nice face and not much else; whereas cute implies an entire package of irresistible femininity and the nice girl with the petite figure and great skin and a nice smile and hair. I just can't see a bad connotation to cute. But no woman I have known sees it that way.

I think that Alex just looks annoying in his photo, cackling with cigarette-laden hand in the air, wrist cocked back. Like someone who would laugh with insufferable vigor at his own jokes. Perhaps he is nothing like this in real life, but that's what his pic conveys to me.

i cackle at my own jokes with more insufferable vigor than glenn, but less than kos.

Man, when women start talking about guys like this as being "cute", well, I know I need never fear. Sheesh, maybe it's my low caffiene state at the moment, but I have the intense desire to give him a Dutch rub and a wedgie, and then read Rod McKuen poems aloud to him until he cries.

But I did that last night, too, so, maybe it's just fresh in my mind.

Markos is NOT cute. He's bug eyed, for starters.

Wow, that Ann Bartow is a real piece of work...

And here's Reynolds, attired in one of his many happenin' t-shirts

Oh, nooooo. What have I unleashed today?

JohnK: The back cover!

Joseph: Okaaaay.

Freeman: Maybe the adjective "gnomish" would help perceive what is seen as cute.

Women who get pissy about the compliment "cute": They sound kind of ... unfunloving.

Anyway, I think Alex is cute in the picture. With Kos, it's not so much that his eyes are buggy, but the overall feeling of nervous tension in the whole face, especially the eyes, which combines with everything we know about how much he wants power. I find that highly unattractive.

Actually, the woman who recoiled at being called cute was very fun-loving and one of the more easy-going women I have ever known. Most of her friends in law school were guys. That is why I was so shocked when she recoiled at the word.

The relative cuteness of Glenn, Kos, and this dude is besides the point. What's important is what level of cuteness their mates are! Thus are men truly judged by the world. By that yardstick, the Glenn-Helen combo blows all competition out of the water!

I think Glenn is totally cute. He's got that hot geek factor working for him. Plus, he's smart and cool.

Confirmation word: aireh. A feeling we all know so well.

You seem to approve of comments in your threads that are homophobic and gay bashing, but you seem to delete comments in those threads that point that out.

She does???? Well she has yet to delete one of my posts. That I know of, at least.

I think that makes Ann tolerant of gays, to put it mildly. She's not only tolerant, she's 100% supportive.

And what's wrong with tolerating homophobes? They're obviously a majority of this country. It is silly to try and silence them. Better to debate them. And yes - call them names when they do the same to us. :)

Downtownlad: You seem mellow this evening. A key factor to remember is that I delete all of X's posts. It doesn't matter what they say. I don't read them. I'm 100% intolerant there.

downtownlad said...

I'm always mellow. I think people just misinterpret my mood when I bang out 60 comments an hour. What can I say - I type fast.

I do like to provoke people though. But I'm always mellow when doing so! :)

And maybe those shrooms have something to do with it . . .
