"Sam's got the intellect necessary to bring a lot of class to that court."

President Bush just said that. It sounds weird to me, but I'm guessing it sounds right to people who listen to sports commentary.

MORE: The word "that" is especially unfortunate. Other courts might have class without the infusion of Alitosity, but that court. (I hope it sounded better spoken than it reads.)

I just heard the same thing (on NPR I guess). And he struggled mightily to string together that very short sentence.

I have been a big Bush supporter but am getting really tired of his incoherence. Thank God there are term limits.

No, it's just weird Ann. Vintage Bush-speak.

Of course, given the way Scalia wields his intellect throughout "that court" - like a bull in a china shop - perhaps Bush is hoping that Alito's intellectual serenity will help restore more collegial calm amongst the justices.

Maybe what he means is that, for him, “having class” is synonymous to “being a charlatan” and must require a lot of intellect since he himself doesn’t do it that well.

Hee hee...sounds like a comment that reflects more on the current Justices than on Alito...I'm sure they'll be be pleased to hear it....

Uh, no it didn't.

He started out strong, but then used the word class and temperament much too many times (3 for each, if memory serves).

It was not his best extemporaneous effort, but bless him, he had just come from a breakfast meeting with Judge Alito and family, at the ungodly time of 7 AM.

Goodness knows what I was doing up at that time.

I've no problems with term limits either, but Bush's awkward phrasing doesn't bother or irritate me.

I would much rather have a president I knew stood behind his words, rather than one who used pretty words which meant nothing.

Very rarely do we have both.

That was what I thought too.

Yeah, it's about time that bunch of yahoos got some class. "Hey, Kennedy, put your pants on. The new guy's here."

Victoria, he goes to bed pretty early, so he ought to be sharp enough early in the morning. Besides, he has a really important job; we can expect him to try to be at his best when he speaks publicly.

What he said sounds dumb, dumb and weird. Why search so hard for a reason to give him a break?

For my own, part, I know for a fact that there are many times when I appear dumb, dumb, and weird, and I would hope that other would give me a break.

Elizabeth - OT, but I read an article about several colleges/universities in New Orleans starting up again this term. Good to hear. Hope yours is one of them!

Tsk.

Obviously, you misstook my words about Bush as a comment on Bush.

It was a comment on my sleeping habits, because it's all about the Victoria in life!

OK, I'll buy into the Vicocentric Universe Theory. And I still think you'd muster a few sensible words together despite the early hour. But it's hard. It's hard work.

Jennifer: Yes! We begin classes Jan. 30, a bit late to finish setting up 1000 FEMA trailers for faculty, staff and students who lost their homes. It's going to be an interesting year.

The EPA just finished "mold remediation" in my building, so my office is a big wall of boxes of books, hoisted well over my head. I'm not sure how to approach this. I'm going in (as in "I'm going in! Send help if I don't come out!") tomorrow to try to locate my desk.

The only way to make this quote sound funnier is to run it through the dialectizer. Althouse in Jive. Suddenly the quote becomes:

"Sam's gots de intellect necessary t'brin' some lot uh class t'dat court. Man!"

Of course Alito will bring a lot of class to that Court. Heck, he's just happy to have a chance to go out and judge every day. He's going to take it one day at a time. He thanks God, his family and coaches that he has this opportunity. All his life he dreamed of judging in the big leagues, and a lot of guys didn't make it. He's just going to judge hard, be a student of the game, and see how it goes. We're really looking forward to having him on the team, and if all goes well, maybe we can make the playoffs this year, and give all of our great Supreme Court fans what they really deserve. This isn’t to disrespect any of the other courts. They’re great, great courts. There’s a lot of great judges on those courts. Lot of talent there. But we obviously think we have the most Supreme Court right here, and Sam Alito is going to bring a lot of class to it, as well as a great deep game. Yep, we’re sorry the trade for Miers didn’t work out, but that’s how the game is played at this level, and we had some reservations about her talent. You win some, you lose some, that’s why they play the game, Larry.

Or the undo function... I find myself thinking "COMMAND-Z!" and reaching for an imaginary keyboard quite frequently: in the car, in the kitchen, etc...
