"If Katrina has laid bare the shortcomings of Bush-style conservatism, it has also exposed problems with contemporary urban liberalism."

That's a well-framed essay topic, from Joel Kotkin & David Friedman, writing in The New Republic.

Yup, yup, the Democrats could really make some political hay from this if the Governor of La. and the Mayor of New Orleans were not Democrats. Too bad for reality....but then, those that are suffering the most don't vote much, so it's a draw...

I have had posts on my blog saying that the deaths in Iraq were mostly in poor, urban areas where minorities primarily live. The irony of that statement is that liberals are ALL the one's in charge of these big City governments. When a strong conservative or moderate takes over a big City, like Guiliani, things improve overnight.

always thought that the Republican party had a better sell to cynical people. If the republican party is the party of the business class and the well to do, then the poor should vote republican becuase republicans know that to keep votes they would need to turn poor people into middle class people.

In contrast, why would democrats seek to help out the poor at all. If they help out the poor and the poor moves into the middle class, they will start voting republican! If I was cynical about the human condition (and believed politicians only cared about getting re-elected) I would never vote democrat because a democrat wants you to stay poor.

Don't bash me too much, its just an observation.

Sloanasaurus: I have to agree with you. Liberals are all for welfare. In fact, they really like it because it keeps the poor dependent. Then they need the liberals since they are the ones that love entitlement and big government agencies. And you know the liberals are the only ones that really care about the poor.

Conservatives are the evil ones. They would like to help get people off welfare and have them become self-sufficient because that is empowering, but since they don't want to keep pouring money into a welfare system that hasn't worked in decades and try something different (like continuing education and trade training incentives), they are evil.

Now I will be the one to get bashed.

Yes, well, it would be interesting to get Elizabeth's take on this article in TNR now that I understand she lives in N.O.

Anna: A tear rolled down my cheek when I read that part about empowerment, honestly. You conservatives are so sweet and open-minded and gracious and whatever...well, except I haven't heard a conservative say anything that sounded remotely like that in real life. Usually when conservatives go whining about welfare, it's because they saw some woman in a supermarket checkout line wearing, like, makeup and clean clothes and maybe a little jewelry and she was buying - are you ready for this? - steak with food stamps, who obviously represents every single person on welfare ever. Then they go on about how physically nauseated they were that they actually saw a poor person who isn't pathetic and filthy, who doesn't wear plus-sized Route 66 jeans and eat ramen 365 days per year. Because if I have to give my hard-earned tax dollars to poor people, they better be goddamn quaint, okay?? I want to see that hopeless, downtrodden look on their faces!

Also...what is "trade training"? Like a Bryman college kind of thing? Which is already advertised 800 times per day between late morning talk shows? The government needs to spend money recruiting people into these programs, instead of on welfare?? Yes, I think it would, in fact, be wonderful to have a government that is absolutely useless. Well said.

Sloanasaurus: Absolutely. Cynical people just love conservatives! I bet that every cynical person believes that if you truly let Jesus Christ into your heart and also funnel such a percentage of your income into your local church or whatever, your soul will be welcomed into heaven after your death! Also I love this argument: poor people should be Republicans because the Republican party is the party of the business class and the well-to-do. That's flawless logic right there.

Sorry if you view this as bashing! I just don't want to disappoint, and I really don't want to prove your wonderful foresight wrong. You silly little victims are all sooo ky0000t.
