First day of classes.

It's the first day of classes here at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Don't you love the fall back-to-school feeling?

Wow, you guys start late up there- here at University of Illinois Champaign, we started 2 weeks ago.

Is it still exciting to begin again even after so many years of teaching (not to mention all the years of actually going to school)?

It's a state tradition. I think it has to do with letting students keep Wisconsin resort jobs through Labor Day weekend.

I dunno, Ann. I'm beginning to get a real complex about the time around labor Day weekend.

I love the back-to-school feeling, particularly because I'm not in school anymore. I'm counting the days until we hear reports of another drunk underclassman toppling off a balcony. (I'm sure the law school is much more civilized)

I miss not going back to school in the fall of each year. It's been twenty-one years since I last was a student...in the formal sense, of course.

Speaking of terms. At OSU, my alma mater, and at the University of Cincinnati near where I live now, the quarter system prevails. So, fall term doesn't begin until the third or fourth week in September. The graduate school I attended--Trinity Lutheran Seminary--was also on the quarter system. I've always been an advocate of the system because the terms are shorter--ten weeks--and give more variety to students in their classwork each year.

I teach at the high school level, we started today. My only observation will be that it is getting increasingly difficult to decipher the different clicques when 90% of the kids are wearing black t-shirts, jeans and Chuck Taylors(including the girls). And as usual, except for the AP kids, none have brought a notebook or anything to write with.

It would be even nicer if there were some fall weather to go with it rather than the 86 degrees we had today. Gets awfully hot in the kitchen!
